ON October 22, Toastmasters International celebrates its 102nd anniversary, marking more than a century of transforming lives through communication, leadership and personal growth.

What began as a small speaking club in California has evolved into a global educational movement spanning over 149 countries and territories, empowering millions to become confident communicators, effective leaders and engaged citizens.

The vision of Ralph C. Smedley

Ralph C. Smedley, an educator with the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) recognised the need for young people to develop communication, leadership and meeting-management skills. In 1905, he established an informal speaking club in Bloomington, Illinois, where participants learned through practice and constructive feedback.

Although these early clubs eventually dissolved, Smedley remained committed to his vision of personal growth through experiential learning. That vision became a reality on  October 22. 1924 when he organised the first permanent Toastmasters club at the Santa Ana YMCA in California.

This pioneering initiative laid the foundation for Toastmasters International, a global movement dedicated to developing confident communicators and effective leaders.

From a local club to a global movement

Toastmasters expanded steadily during its early years. In 1928, Ralph C. Smedley published the first Manual of Instructions to standardise club operations.

The organisation adopted the name Toastmasters International in 1930 and was incorporated in 1932. International growth soon followed, with Scotland becoming the first district outside the United States and Australia’s Wollongong club marking another milestone in global expansion.

The rise of Toastmasters in Asia

Asia has become  one of the fastest growing and most vibrant regions in the Toastmasters world. Hong Kong established its first club in 1954, followed by Bangkok in 1955 and Singapore in 1967. Malaysia welcomed its first club in 1978 while Indonesia followed shortly thereafter in 1979.

In the decades that followed, Toastmasters expanded across Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, South Korea, and many other parts of Asia.

Through its educational programmes, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds gained opportunities to strengthen their communication skills, build self-confidence and develop leadership capabilities.

The Malaysian journey

Malaysia’s Toastmasters journey began with the chartering of the Toastmasters International Kuala Lumpur Club in July 1978. From this pioneering club, the movement expanded nationwide to Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, and Sabah.

Today, with 360 active clubs, Malaysian Toastmasters continue to make significant contributions, producing distinguished leaders and strengthening Toastmasters International worldwide.

Gerald Green and the growth of Southeast Asia

During the 1990s, the late Gerald Green, affectionately known as “Papa Gerald,” played a pivotal role in expanding Toastmasters across Southeast Asia.

Advocating stronger support from World Headquarters, he championed clubs and district development in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Hong Kong and Macau.

His vision, persistence, and collaboration with dedicated volunteers strengthened regional leadership, membership growth, club quality and organisational excellence, laying the foundation for one of the most successful periods in Toastmasters history.

The legacy of District 51

These efforts culminated in the remarkable success of District 51, comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Macau.

Widely regarded as one of the most dynamic districts in the Toastmasters world, District 51 achieved an extraordinary distinction by being recognised as the Champion District in the World for five consecutive years, from 1998-1999 through 2002-2003.

This unprecedented achievement reflected exceptional leadership, strong teamwork, sustained membership growth, educational excellence, and an unwavering commitment to quality at every level of the organisation.

Malaysians on the World Stage

Malaysia’s contribution to Toastmasters extends well beyond membership growth and district achievements. To date, three Malaysians have been elected to the Toastmasters International Board of Directors, helping shape the strategic direction of the organisation on a global scale.

Among them, John Lau of Kuching, made history when he was elected International Director in 2005 and later became the first Malaysian to serve as International President of Toastmasters International during the 2012-2013 term.

Continuing this proud tradition of service, Joseph Gomez of Kuala Lumpur was elected to the Board of Directors in 2012 while Hani Nur Zaihanirah Zaini of Kuching was elected in 2025, further strengthening Malaysia’s presence and influence within the global organisation.

A legacy that continues

As Toastmasters International celebrates its 102nd anniversary, it remains firmly anchored to the vision of Ralph C. Smedley: creating a supportive environment where people learn, grow, and achieve their full potential.

What began as a single YMCA speaking club has blossomed into a worldwide network dedicated to helping individuals communicate with confidence, lead with purpose, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

Malaysia’s experience reflects that broader journey. From the chartering of a single club in Kuala Lumpur in 1978 to the emergence of international leaders, Board members, distinguished communicators and the organisation’s first Malaysian International President, the country’s contribution to the Toastmasters movement has been both significant and enduring.

Together with the achievements of District 51 and the pioneering efforts of Papa Gerald, this legacy stands as a powerful testament to the enduring values of communication, leadership, service and lifelong learning.

As Ralph C. Smedley wisely observed, “We learn best in moments of enjoyment.” For 102 years, Toastmasters International has empowered individuals worldwide to find their voice, develop leadership skills  and create positive change.

Happy 102nd Anniversary, Toastmasters International. May its enduring values continue to inspire and benefit communities and future generations in every nation.
