KUCHING, 4 Nov: The colourful lighting at the white cat sculpture area in Padungan to celebrate Deepavali is expected to be a symbol of community unity and spread the spirit of mutual help, thus strengthening harmony among the multi-racial communities in Sarawak.

Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng said Deepavali's message symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil should be a guideline in public life.

He argued that society should avoid overreaction to issues that could potentially affect state order, instead making celebration a platform for mutual respect, understanding and respect for cultural diversity.

"I wish everyone could be a light to shine on their lives who really need our help, besides being more caring and compassionate.

"I'm sure there are many more festivals to come that celebrate our cultural diversity. So let's learn from each other, be better people and make everyone happy.

"I would like to congratulate Deepavali on the Indian community", he said.

He said this when he was met by the media after a colourful lighting ceremony at Padungan white cat sculpture area for Deepavali celebrations here today.

Meanwhile, Sri Maha Mariamman Kuching Temple Association President Dato Shankar R P Asnani said the initiative reflects the state government's continued support to the Indian community in Sarawak.

He said that the principle of inclusion practiced by the state government also encourages communities of different races and religions to continue living in an atmosphere of mutual respect and celebrate cultural diversity.

"This initiative makes the Indian community here very happy. The Sarawak government has implemented the principle of inclusion among diverse communities.

"Here, we are modest, love other cultures, respect all religions and celebrate together", he said.
