SERIAN, 4 Nov: An individual in Serian faces threats and disruption to unlicensed money lending or Ah Long after making a loan of RM3,000 via WhatsApp app.
Serian Regional Police Chief Superintendent Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said that he received a report on the incident yesterday.
According to him, an initial investigation found that the victim received a loan offer from individuals using the name QUICK LOANS before agreeing to borrow RM3,000.
However, the victim only received RM2,100 of the agreed loan amount.
The victim was then asked to pay an increasing amount of the original loan, in addition to receiving threatening, insulting and disturbing messages via WhatsApp.
Worse, the suspect is also believed to have threatened to harass victims' family members, including threatening the safety of their children if payment claims are not met.
"The case is being investigated under Section 5 (2) of the Lenders Act 1951. Early checks found that the phone number used had a previous record in CCIS systems, while further investigation was ongoing to identify suspects", he said.
Police are advising the public to be cautious about offering money loans through order applications and avoid dealing with unlicensed lenders.
