SERIAN, 4 Nov: Theft and damage to cables at a telecommunications terminal in Kamung Batu Mawang Mine here caused telephone and internet services disrupted within a radius of about 2.5 kilometers.

Serian Regional Police Chief Superintendent Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said the department received a report of the incident at 5:58 p.m. yesterday.

According to him, a report was made by an engineer at the company organizing the wiring equipment after finding several cable units had been cut and believed stolen.

"An initial investigation found several cable units had been cut and believed stolen", he said in a statement today.

He said the incident not only caused losses to the companies involved, but also affected local people who depend on communication facilities for day-to-day operations.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code and further investigation is underway to identify and track suspects involved.

"The police took the incident seriously because theft and damage to telecommunications infrastructure could harm public interest", he said.
