KUCHING, Nov 4: Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge are among the institutions where Sarawak plans to send young civil servants to strengthen their skills and prepare them for future leadership positions.
State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said the initiative was part of the State’s efforts to develop the next generation of civil service leaders, particularly as the workforce saw a growing number of younger officers.
He highlighted the increasing presence of millennials and Generation Z in the Sarawak civil service, noting that their different expectations, aspirations and perspectives would shape its future.
“To prepare them for these responsibilities, the State would continue investing in their skills, competencies and leadership potential through training, skills enhancement and leadership development programmes.
“These efforts would include sending young officers to leading international institutions such as Harvard, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Henley and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy,” he said at the Civil Service Day 2026 celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Abu Bakar expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Sarawak Cabinet for approving substantial allocations to strengthen the capabilities of civil servants and prepare them for future challenges.
At the local level, the new Leadership Institute of Civil Service which will be officially opened by Abang Johari soon is expected to expand access to updated training and competency development programmes.
He said the aim was to ensure officers at every level were equipped with the knowledge, skills and capabilities needed to meet the demands of the future. — DayakDaily
