SIBU, Oct 27: The Antu River Basketball Range will provide a larger seating capacity of about 700 spectators through an upgrade project worth RM200,000 that is underway.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government of Sarawak, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the second phase project involves replacing existing wooden seating structure to concrete to ensure more robust and durable facilities.
"The existing seating area has five floors with a capacity of about 500 spectators, but the deteriorating condition of the wooden structure requires improvement.
"So, I allocated RM200,000 to upgrade the seating area from a wooden structure to a concrete one, in addition to increasing the number of floors from five to seven.
"With these improvements, the capacity of the audience is expected to increase by 200 people, bringing the total number to about 700", he said when met during a visit to the project site here today.
He said the project started on 12 October and is expected to be completed within three months according to contract deadline.
According to him, the addition of two seating levels aims to increase the capacity of the arena, thereby providing better facilities and comfort for spectators watching basketball matches.
Tiang said that basketball is very popular among the Sibu community and contributes to the city's good performance in the sport.
"So, to encourage young people to participate in healthy activities like playing basketball, I have always supported the Association of Sibu Basketball", he said. - TVS
