KUCHING: A total of 361,000 students have benefited from hands-on learning programmes under Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS), aimed at preparing young Sarawakians for the digital economy.

TEGAS chairman, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said the organisation had also extended its programmes to rural communities to ensure young people have greater access to education and technology opportunities.

“Through Project of Dreams Realized, covering 14 locations, and the establishment of Think and Tinker Mini Labs in 25 rural schools, TEGAS is ensuring that no young person is left behind,” he said at the TEGAS Media Appreciation Night at Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Monday (Oct 26).

Len also highlighted the media’s role in helping parents, students and communities understand the opportunities available through the initiatives.

“The media translates policies and educational opportunities into an easily understood narrative that inspires the people,” he said.

Among TEGAS’ recent initiatives was an artificial intelligence festival that attracted more than 5,000 visitors, while its career fair drew 35,000 visitors and featured 2,000 job vacancies.

Its Digital Village and innovation hubs in Miri and Bintulu also provide startups with seed funding, mentoring and global exposure.

The appreciation night recognised media practitioners for their continued support in bringing information on TEGAS’ programmes to the public, particularly young people at the grassroots level.

“Without media support in explaining and promoting these efforts, the impact of our innovation will not reach the wider public,” Len said.
