PHYSICAL development of Tanjung Embang is expected to begin early next year as Sarawak prepares the area to attract high-value industries through new energy, port and industrial infrastructure.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said a dedicated task force had been established to coordinate the area’s overall development.

“A dedicated task force comprising relevant government agencies and authorities has been established to coordinate the overall development of Tanjung Embang,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech during the Budget State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (Oct 21).

Abang Johari said Tanjung Embang was being developed as a major economic growth area for Kuching, supported by strategic liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, the Kuching Deep-Sea Port and industrial parks.

The development would attract industries such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, food processing and intelligent machinery.

He said the proposed New Kuching International Airport, with an initial capacity of 15 million passengers annually, would complement the wider Tanjung Embang ecosystem by expanding passenger and cargo movement.

Meanwhile, Samajaya 2 High Tech Park in Samarahan had been identified as the first development area to kickstart the wider Kuching Low-Carbon Hub.

“PETROS is leading the development of the park and its critical infrastructure, with the site targeted to be ready for investors by early 2028,” he said.

To support gas supply, PETROS had entered into a Joint Development Agreement with Höegh Evi to develop the Kuching LNG Terminal as part of the hub, establishing Sarawak’s first LNG regasification facility to serve Kuching and surrounding areas.

PETROS was also exploring the integrated development of offshore gas fields in Western Sarawak, off the coast of Kuching, to provide a reliable source of gas for the hub.

“Together, the LNG terminal and the development of Western Sarawak’s offshore gas resources will strengthen the long-term gas supply needed for power generation and future industrial activities in the southern region,” he said.
