SARAWAK will focus its initial onshore oil and gas exploration efforts on Balingian, Limbang, Marudi and Niah following the resumption of production in Miri.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said advanced gravity surveys were providing a clearer picture of the geology beneath the surface.
“We are building on this momentum and exploring other onshore sites,” he said in his winding-up speech during the Budget State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.
He said advances in geophysical technology and subsurface imaging had opened opportunities to revisit Sarawak’s onshore hydrocarbon potential.
In July, PETROS and PETRA Energy commenced first oil production from the Adong Kechil West Early Production System in Block SK433 in Miri.
The operation produces about 800 barrels of oil per day from a single well, marking the revival of Sarawak’s onshore oil production.
Sarawak’s petroleum industry began when oil was first struck at Canada Hill in Miri on October 10, 1910, with onshore production continuing until 1972.
Abang Johari said the development of onshore and offshore resources formed part of efforts to strengthen energy security as industrial growth increased demand.
“We are strengthening Sarawak’s energy security by developing our onshore and offshore oil and gas resources, while expanding hydropower and solar generation,” he said.
