SIBU, 27 Oct: The ongoing roof leakage problem at Wesley Methodist Church, Sibu will be addressed through an upgrade project worth RM200,000 under the Outdoor Transformation Program (RTP).
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the project involves water purification work as well as roof replacement to provide more sustainable solutions.
He believes that the approach is important for dealing with leakage problems in the long run, as opposed to temporary repairs that can only solve problems in the short term.
"The project mainly involves waterproofing. As you can see, there are some parts that have leaked because the roof is flat.
"In tropical weather, flat roofs often cause water leakage. Therefore, we want to implement water-resistant work as a lasting solution rather than just a temporary solution", he said.
He said so during a site visit to mark the dedication of an upgraded Wesley Methodist Church project, here today.
Commenting further, the Chairperson of the Adhan Nagar Undangan Sabha (ADUN) said that the scope of the project is not only focused on water treatment works but also involves overall roof repair including replacement of existing roofs.
"This work is designed to address the serious leakage problem facing churches, with flat roof designs identified as among the contributing factors", he said.
Tiang explained that he was confident the waterproofing and roof replacement could solve the leakage problem faced by the church.
According to him, the project has been planned for such a long time and its implementation continues on schedule.
He said the visit also involved inspection and submission of some RTP projects which still have work to be completed.
Upgrades to the Wesley Methodist Church are scheduled to begin November 6th and take four months to complete.
