SIBU, Nov 4: Water pressure in Rantau Panjang has been stabilised following adjustments to prevent further pipe bursts after the commissioning of a new water treatment plant increased pressure in the existing supply network.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said several ageing pipes were damaged when water pressure rose significantly after the new plant began operations.

“After the plant began operations, I was informed that water pressure in Rantau Panjang had increased significantly, causing damage to several old pipes.

“However, adjustments have since been made to regulate the water pressure and prevent further pipe bursts caused by excessive pressure,” he said when officiating the inauguration of the Rantau Panjang Acute Water Treatment System yesterday (Nov 3).

The new facility, with a treatment capacity of five million litres per day (MLD), was built to improve treated water supply for residents in the area.

Julaihi said the RM5 million project began in March this year and was completed in October, incorporating the latest technology to provide a more reliable and stable water supply.

He said the facility was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure Rantau Panjang residents’ water supply needs continued to receive attention.

At the same time, he urged residents to use water responsibly and appreciate the supply they receive daily.

“This new water treatment facility is among the government’s initiatives to ensure the water supply needs of Rantau Panjang residents continue to receive attention,” he said. — DayakDaily
