MIRI: Police issued 51 traffic summonses after inspecting 66 motorcycles in an enforcement operation targeting traffic offences and dangerous riding behaviour in the city.

The operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters, covered the Taman Tunku and Taman Jelita housing estates and Kampung Lusut from 3 pm to 9.30 pm on Sunday.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 81 people, comprising 78 men and three women, were checked during the operation.

Among the offences detected were riding without a valid driving licence, unauthorised motorcycle modifications, excessively noisy exhaust systems, missing side mirrors and the use of non-compliant registration plates. Police also took action against individuals who allowed unlicensed riders to use their motorcycles.

Failure to wear a helmet was identified as the most common offence, according to the police statement.

The operation was aimed at curbing illegal street-racing activities and other dangerous behaviour that could endanger road users, disrupt traffic flow and undermine public order.

ACP Mohd Farhan said police would not compromise with individuals involved in illegal street activities that put their own safety and that of other road users at risk.

He urged motorcyclists to comply with traffic regulations, ensure their vehicles met the required specifications and avoid modifications that breached the law.

Members of the public with information about illegal street-racing activities are encouraged to contact IPD Miri or their nearest police station.
