KUCHING, Nov 4: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) youth is expressing their support for party information chief Joshua Ting to be nominated as the candidate for Bawang Assan constituency in the upcoming 2026 Sarawak Election.
Citing his years of active involvement in grassroots work and his understanding of the needs and concerns of the local community, PDP youth said Joshua has long been actively involved in Bawang Assan, regularly visiting rural villages and longhouses, as well as participating in community activities, where he has maintained close contact with local residents.
Joshua previously served as the PDP Bawang Assan Youth Chief and a councillor of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).
PDP youth noted that Joshua and his team have been involved in various community improvement efforts, including improving rural lighting, repairing community facilities and longhouse access roads, as well as coordinating disaster relief and welfare activities.
The youth further pointed out that Bawang Assan consists of numerous rural villages and longhouse communities, each facing different challenges and needs. Understanding these communities requires more than occasional visits.
“It takes consistent engagement, a willingness to listen, and a genuine commitment to addressing the concerns of local residents,” said PDP youth in a recent statement.
The youth believed that Joshua’s years of grassroots service, together with his experience in local government and the State administration, are among the key reasons for supporting his nomination as a candidate.
At the same time, PDP Youth strongly urged all parties to remain rational and responsible when discussing the selection of candidates, particularly on social media.
The Youth firmly condemned all forms of personal attacks, malicious smears and baseless accusations.
“Political discussions should be based on facts and mutual respect, rather than becoming platforms for insults, hostility and personal attacks.”
“Everyone has the right to express their views and support their preferred candidates. However, freedom of expression should never be used as an excuse to damage another person’s reputation.
“Political views may differ, and disagreements are part of democracy. However, personal attacks, the spreading of false information and deliberate attempts to create division should never be accepted as a way of expressing political opinions,” said PDP youth.
They maintained that differences in political opinions should be handled with maturity and respect, with the interests of the people and the future of Sarawak remaining the common priority.
Meanwhile, Joshua Ting shared in his social media page that he had a meaningful breakfast catch-up with Bawang Assan incumbent Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, where they shared thoughts and exchanged views on the way forward for Bawang Assan constituency.
“I deeply value the wisdom, guidance and experience of our senior leaders. With the continued support of the party, our seniors and the community, I hope to carry forward the responsibility and commitment to serve the same constituency, in line with the party’s decision,” said Ting.
Bawang Assan has been held by Wong since 1991. His advanced age is the only factor against him in view of approaching election. —DayakDaily
