MIRI: Police issued 51 traffic summonses after inspecting 66 motorcycles during an enforcement operation aimed at curbing illegal street racing and other dangerous riding activities here on Sunday.

The operation, carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, covered Taman Tunku, Taman Jelita and Kampung Lusut from 3pm to 9.30pm.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said 81 individuals – 78 men and three women – were checked during the operation.

Among the offences detected were riding without a valid licence, unauthorised motorcycle modifications, excessively noisy exhaust systems, missing side mirrors and the use of non-compliant registration plates.

Police also took action against motorcycle owners who allowed unlicensed riders to use their vehicles, while failure to wear a helmet was the most common offence recorded.

Mohd Farhan said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal street-racing activities and dangerous road behaviour that could endanger other motorists, disrupt traffic flow and affect public order.

He stressed that police would continue to take firm action against those involved in illegal street activities that placed their own safety and that of other road users at risk.

Motorcyclists were also reminded to comply with traffic regulations, ensure their vehicles meet legal specifications and avoid modifications that contravene the law.

Members of the public with information on illegal street-racing activities are encouraged to contact the Miri District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.
