KAPIT, Oct 24: Residents of Rumah Serani Eli, Nanga Ibau Tengah, Kapit who lost their homes in a fire in May 2018, have rebuilt their lives in a 39-door longhouse, with a further RM540,000 allocated to improve their living facilities.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced the allocation during his visit to the longhouse today for its Mangkong Tiang ceremony and official opening.
“To further improve the residents’ facilities, I also announced an allocation of RM40,000 for a kitchen storeroom, RM300,000 for tile installation and RM200,000 for a jetty.
“The need to upgrade the plumbing system and establish a resource centre will also be given attention,” he said in a statement shared on his social media.
Nanta said the residents had faced various challenges following the fire before finally moving into their new longhouse on Aug 31, 2024.
The longhouse was built under the Fire Victims’ Emergency Assistance Project, with residents completing their homes through their own initiative alongside government assistance.
He said the community’s determination to rebuild their homes reflected the spirit that strengthened longhouse communities.
He expressed hope that the longhouse would continue to provide a comfortable environment for families to build their lives and children to grow up in. — DayakDaily
