KUCHING: A total of 60 families from the B40 community received assistance through the Indian Association Kuching (IAK) Annual Deepavali Charity Contribution Programme 2026 held here today.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the annual initiative reflected the spirit of compassion, solidarity and shared responsibility in ensuring that no member of the community was left behind.
“Programmes such as this demonstrate that charity knows no boundaries of race or religion. When we extend a helping hand to those in need, we strengthen not only individual families but also the bonds that hold our society together,” he said.
His speech was read by Padawan Municipal Council Chairman, Tan Kai, at the event.
Dr Sim said the programme went beyond distributing essential goods and financial assistance, as it also demonstrated the community’s care and support for families in need.
He said Sarawak’s strength lay in its diversity and the ability of people from different backgrounds to live together in harmony while respecting one another’s cultures, religions and traditions.
He added that the assistance would help ease some of the recipients’ household expenses and bring additional comfort as they prepared to celebrate Deepavali.
“While financial assistance and essential household items may provide immediate relief, the spirit behind this programme carries an even greater message: you are not alone, and your community cares about you,” he said.
Dr Sim also called on government agencies, non-governmental organisations, businesses, community associations and individuals to play their part in supporting those in need.
He encouraged more organisations, businesses and members of the public to contribute their time, resources and expertise to charitable initiatives, noting that even small contributions could make a meaningful difference when combined.
He expressed appreciation to the donors, sponsors and volunteers whose contributions in cash and kind had made the programme possible.
Dr Sim also commended IAK’s President Ratha Perumall, the association’s management committee, welfare subcommittee and other organisers for their dedication in carrying out the annual charity initiative.
He said meaningful community service is measured not only by the amount donated, but also by the sincerity, dedication and compassion behind the contribution.
As Deepavali approaches, he hoped the Festival of Lights would bring happiness, peace, good health and prosperity to those celebrating, while inspiring the wider community to care for the less fortunate and uphold mutual respect, compassion and unity.
He also wished IAK continued success in its future community and welfare initiatives.
