KUCHING, 27 Oct: The Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) has requested airlines and express bus operators to investigate the addition of services to make it easier for the people of Sarawak to return home to vote in the 13th Sarawak General Election (PRU).

MOTS in a statement today said the application took into account the need for Sarawak citizens working in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Sabah to return to their respective constituencies to fulfill their voting responsibilities.

"For air transport, MOTS has asked the airlines to plan an increase in flight frequency in the weeks before and week after voting day to meet the needs of voters returning to vote and their return trip thereafter.

"For express bus services, MOTS advises and encourages operators in Sarawak to increase the frequency of travel temporarily, starting three days before to three days after voting day", according to MOTS.

MOTS also encourages the operators to arrange a reserve bus, schedule additional trips and open online ticket reservations early to avoid ticket shortages and ensure safe and smooth travel on the state's main routes.

However, the change in express bus travel schedule is subject to notification to and approval by the Sarawak Board of Commercial Vehicle Licensing (LPKP) while the addition of flights depends on the operational capabilities of the airline as well as related approvals.

In this regard, the public is advised to plan travel ahead of time and refer to the operator's official channels for accurate information on schedules, fares and ticket bookings. - TVS
