KUCHING: Distance running is becoming another passion for 14-year-old Angelica Jody, who balances her interest in running with her training as a diving athlete.
The SMK Padungan student from Serian finished fifth in the women’s open 10km category at the DBKU Mayor’s Run 2026 at Padang Merdeka here yesterday (Oct 18).
Her mother, Annabella Edward, cheered her on from the sidelines, while her brother, Justin Joel Joseph Bassanio, also took part in the run in the 10km men’s open.
Angelica said she had been interested in running for four years, although she only began participating in organised runs this year.
“I have been interested in running for four years,” she told Sarawak Tribune when met at the event.
She also joins Petra Jaya Joggers for weekly running sessions to gain experience and improve her endurance.
Angelica said her diving training had helped her build the stamina needed for distance running, as she trains daily and incorporates fitness exercises into her routine.
“I train every day as a diving athlete, and we also do fitness training. That is where I get my energy,” she said.
She trains under Sarawak diving coach Shi Yang and said the training had helped improve her stamina for running.
Despite being relatively new to organised running events, her fifth-place finish in the 10km category was an encouraging result for the young Bidayuh athlete as she continues to pursue both sporting interests.
The DBKU Mayor’s Run 2026 attracted about 2,000 participants and featured three categories — the 3km Fun Run, 5km Fun Run and 10km Competitive Run.
