KUCHING, 17 Oct: SPM Reduction Programme 2026: STEM becomes an important platform to help students prepare more fully for the Malaysian Certificate of Teaching (SPM) exam especially in academic, mental and psychological aspects.
Deputy Minister in Sarawak's Premier Department (Coordinator of Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that thorough preparation is essential to ensure students can face the exams with confidence and get excellent results.
According to him, SPM's decision is one of the important factors determining the direction of education and career of students in the future.
"Students need to make preparations in all aspects including physical, mental and psychological to ensure they are truly prepared for the challenges of the exam", he said.
He said this while addressing the Closing Meeting of SPM 2026: STEM Reduction Program at Tun Abang Haji Openg High School, today. A total of 128 students from 5 schools in DUN N.4 Peace Beach area will be taking part in SPM this year.
I'm going to see Dr. Abdul Rahman explained that efforts to strengthen education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields are also aligned with Sarawak's aspiration to become a developed state by 2030.
According to him, development of Sarawak is not only focused on physical progress but also needs to be supported by highly skilled human capital capable of meeting industrial needs and driving the state's economic growth.
He said technological developments including hydrogen-based urban transportation systems and aerospace exploration opened up new opportunities for younger generations to pursue highly skilled careers.
He also touched on the planning of aerospace development in Sarawak including efforts to generate skilled energy capable of supporting future satellite technology and related sector development.
"All these developments require a workforce with knowledge and skills in science and technology. Therefore, students need to take the opportunity to immerse themselves in the field", he said.
In the meantime, he said, career prospects in science, technology and engineering are expected to continue to grow along with industrial development in Sarawak.
For example, he said that the petrochemical and gas sector in Bintulu requires skilled professional staff including engineers to ensure smooth industrial operations.
In this regard, he urged the students to make full use of the SPM preparation programme implemented including mentoring sessions and knowledge sharing with teachers and faculty.
I'm going to see Dr. Abdul Rahman also shared his personal experience in science education as an encouragement to students not to give up on pursuing their ideals.
He said that success requires hard work, discipline and self-confidence.
He hoped that the programme would help improve SPM 2026 achievements especially among students in the affected areas, thus producing more graduates who could potentially contribute to Sarawak's development.-TVS
