SEMPORNA, 19 Oct: The delayed construction project of Front Operations Base (FOB) in Mabul Island is expected to be completed by 4 May 2028 after rescue contractors are appointed to complete the remaining work.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said that the progress of the project shows continued development after the appointment of the contractor.
According to him, the project should be completed on schedule as it is important in strengthening security controls and defending national sovereignty in border areas.
"This field is important as a benchmark for any subsequent projects that require forward operating bases, especially in the border areas of the country, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak", he said.
He said this after conducting a working visit to Ligitan Island, Sipadan Island and Mabul Island today to assess the progress of border security projects, especially those categorized as sick projects.
According to records of the Department of Public Works (JKR), a contract worth RM40.82 million for completing the remaining work on the project was executed by Bina Conso Sdn Bhd.
Mustapha explained that the project on Ligitan Island has been completed, while the implementation of the project on Sipadan Island faced no problems.
In the same visit, the Prime Minister's Department also distributed contributions to 128 members and staff, including from the Malaysian Army (ATM), Marine Police and Sabah Parks, in recognition of their role in maintaining security and preserving the islands.
