KUCHING: TEGAS plans to introduce a community smart farming programme and upgrade its student satellite challenge in 2027, broadening young Sarawakians’ exposure to agricultural technology and aerospace engineering.

Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak’s (TEGAS) Chairman, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the initiatives would strengthen practical learning under TEGAS Community Innovative Learning (TCIL), supported by its RM12.5-million allocation under the Sarawak Budget 2027.

“In 2027, we plan to introduce the TEGAS Community PlayFarm, integrating STEM, IoT-based smart farming, renewable energy and sustainability through hands-on learning.

“We will also upgrade the Sarawak Rocketeer CanSatChallenge to the Sarawak Rocketeer CubeSat Challenge, expanding students’ exposure to satellite technology and aerospace engineering,” he said to Sarawak Tribune.

Len Talif said the programmes would build on existing efforts such as STEM Playground and Think & Tinker Mini Lab, while strengthening students’ innovation and problem-solving skills.

He said expanding access for rural communities remained a priority, with TCIL conducting more than 20 rural outreach programmes annually and its Think & Tinker Mini Lab covering 25 rural school locations.

“Through hands-on STEM and digital activities, including our Think & Tinker Mini Lab in 25 rural school locations, we provide students with opportunities to develop practical skills.

“These initiatives will further develop young Sarawakians’ innovation and problem-solving skills while expanding our outreach, particularly to rural communities,” he said.

Len Talif said outreach would continue expanding in 2027 through Digital Innovation for All (DIfA), introducing students to STEM, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and future career pathways.

The Community Innovation Literacy (COMIL) Programme would also encourage students to develop digital solutions to challenges faced by their communities.

“Through these initiatives and strategic partnerships, we aim to ensure that more rural students can access STEM and digital learning opportunities and develop the skills needed for future careers in technology and innovation.

“By expanding our programmes across Sarawak, we will make sure our youths, no matter where they live, get the skills and support they need to succeed in the digital economy,” he said.
