SIBURAN: A total of 98 clubs, associations, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) in the Tarat constituency have benefited from RM1,389,128 in allocations to support local development projects and community initiatives.

The allocations were handed over by Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Tarat assemblyman, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, during the 2026 Special Project Cheque Handover Programme at the Tarat Service Centre on Saturday (Oct 17).

He said the allocation represented the remaining funds for 2026 and would support the implementation of various projects and development initiatives to benefit the local community.

He said development in the Tarat constituency continued to be strengthened through infrastructure projects and improvements to basic amenities aimed at enhancing residents’ well-being and standard of living.

Over the past five years, 166 projects worth RM25 million had been implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), alongside RM5 million allocated for repairing damaged roofs of residents’ homes.

He added that the constituency had also benefited from projects funded by the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), with their total value reaching RM180 million.

Among the major projects was the RM90-million road linking Semeru to Kehum, which is expected to improve rural connectivity and facilitate travel between Tebedu, Tapah and Bau.

He also highlighted a proposal for the second phase of the road project linking Teng Bukap to Annah Rais in Padawan, estimated to cost RM166 million.

Meanwhile, he urged implementing agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD) and Serian District Council, to expedite approved projects to ensure residents could enjoy their benefits without unnecessary delays.

“The Minor Rural Projects (MRPs) also played an important role in addressing community needs through small-scale initiatives that directly benefited residents,” he said.

On education, he reaffirmed the Sarawak Government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education through the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), particularly in fields that were in high demand across industries and the emerging economy.

He said greater emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), alongside technical skills training, was crucial to producing a highly skilled local workforce that could meet the needs of the job market.

“Schools and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) are encouraged to intensify STEM exposure programmes to help students discover their potential and explore career opportunities in high-technology fields,” he said.

He also highlighted Sarawak’s efforts to strengthen research and innovation capabilities through the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), as well as develop local expertise in technology, chip manufacturing and other high-technology industries.

He urged young Sarawakians to seize the educational opportunities and scholarships available to improve their qualifications and contribute their expertise to the state’s future development.
