KUCHING: Motorists and residents in Semariang now have a safer and more comfortable route following the completion of the Tan Sri Abang Ikhwan Zaini Road upgrading project.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, Malaysia Agreement 1963 and State Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the upgraded road would improve traffic flow while enhancing safety and convenience for road users.

She said the completion of the project reflected the Sarawak Government’s continued efforts to improve infrastructure and public facilities for communities in the area.

“We used to always wonder when this project would be completed, but finally, with the patience and efforts of all parties, we can see the significant changes to this road,” she said in a news report by UKAS when officiating the completion of the Tan Sri Abang Ikhwan Zaini Road Upgrading Project here on Friday (Oct. 16).

The project involved widening the existing road into a dual carriageway, with separate lanes for traffic travelling in each direction.

It also included the construction of a drainage system to increase road capacity and improve rainwater management, as well as road construction and resurfacing works.

The project also saw the completion of a traffic light intersection at Jalan Cenderawasih to support smoother and safer traffic movement.

Sharifah Hasidah, who is also the Semariang assemblywoman, said development in the constituency continued beyond road infrastructure, with various public facilities being implemented through development projects and the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

These included a futsal court, community facilities, as well as upgrading and new construction works involving mosques and surau.

She said the Taman Sukma Hall project had been completed and was expected to be officially opened soon.

Meanwhile, the Kampung Expansion Scheme at Kampung Semariang Batu is planned to involve the construction of more than 100 housing lots.

Sharifah Hasidah also urged residents to take collective responsibility for maintaining the facilities provided, including keeping public areas clean and ensuring road safety.

She also called on residents to cooperate with the authorities in efforts to relocate small traders to more suitable locations.

She expressed her appreciation to the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for its commitment to implementing development projects in the Semariang constituency.

The Tan Sri Abang Ikhwan Zaini Road Upgrading Project was fully completed on July 31, 2026.
