KUCHING, Oct 17: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) top leadership will decide how to resolve overlapping seat claims between Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 13th Sarawak Election (PRN13), says Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Information chief Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

GPS comprises four component parties — Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), SUPP, PDP and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

Abdul Karim said the matter would be discussed among the coalition’s top leaders, adding that GPS had dealt with similar situations over the years.

“That is for the GPS supreme leadership, the presidents, to discuss among themselves. They will know what to do. We have been going through it for so many years already,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating the Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony organised by DayakDaily at Imperial Hotel here today.

Dudong is one example of the seat overlap, having shifted from SUPP’s traditional hold to PDP president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing in the 2021 Sarawak election.

The issue also extends to Bawang Assan, Engkilili and Ba’Kelalan, which were previously represented by former Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) assemblymen Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Johnichal Rayong Ngipa and Baru Bian respectively, before they joined PDP in April 2024.

There have also been other overlapping seats in the past, including Mambong, where incumbent assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil left PSB and joined PBB in 2019, before retaining the seat under PBB in the 2021 Sarawak election.

Abdul Karim, however, stressed that the priority should be the quality of elected representatives rather than the party they represent.

“At the end of the day, what is more important is not the party. It is not the symbol. We want to have good elected representatives, irrespective of whether they represent PBB, SUPP, PDP or PRS. That is how it should be,” he said. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Oct 17: The window for the dissolution of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUNS) is becoming increasingly narrow, raising the likelihood of the State election being held on one of three December weekends, namely Dec 5, 12 or 19, said Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said with the current Assembly’s five-year term ending in December, the window for dissolution and the subsequent election was becoming increasingly limited, making a December poll more likely.

“Personally, I see now we are already near the end of October. We have got November and December. The election must be very, very close,” he told a press conference after officiating DayakDaily’s Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony and launching of Pewarta’s “Sarawak Folklore Book I” at Imperial Hotel today.

Abdul Karim also pointed to the festive and religious calendar as a factor that could complicate the scheduling of a poll in January or February, with Chinese New Year and Ramadan falling during that period.

December, meanwhile, would also present scheduling challenges due to Christmas and the year-end holiday season.

“I would say we have got only one and a half months, November and half of December. So, it has to be somewhere there,” he added.

Abdul Karim, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief, said he was not surprised by speculation that the election could be held on Dec 12 or 19, as both dates fall on weekends, when elections are commonly conducted.

However, he stressed that the dates remained speculative and would depend on when the Assembly was dissolved and the subsequent arrangements made by the Election Commission (EC).

He said the EC would need time to convene and determine the election dates before the campaign period could begin, with past State elections suggesting that about two weeks were usually allocated for campaigning.

Taking these preparations into account, he said a dissolution in late October or November would likely lead to an election in December.

Abdul Karim stressed that the election timeline would ultimately depend on when Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg decided to dissolve the Assembly.

Under election law, he noted, a state election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly, whether it is dissolved by the Premier or automatically upon completing its five-year term.

“I believe any chief executive, including Menteri Besar, Chief Minister or Premier for Sarawak would likely prefer to determine the timing of the dissolution rather than allow the Assembly to expire automatically so to give the State greater control over the circumstances surrounding the election,” he said.

He explained that this is because unforeseen situations, such as flooding, haze or other emergencies, could complicate election preparations if the Assembly were to dissolve automatically at an unfavourable time.

On the possibility of the Assembly being dissolved immediately after its sitting scheduled to end on Oct 21, Abdul Karim said the current sitting was particularly important as it involved the tabling and approval of the Sarawak Budget 2027.

He said the budget needed to be approved by the Assembly to ensure the government could meet its financial commitments, including paying civil servants’ salaries in the following year.

Abdul Karim added that the Sarawak Budget was usually tabled after the federal budget, allowing the State to proceed with its own budgetary process.

He said the timing of any dissolution after the budget sitting would ultimately remain the Premier’s prerogative.

While the possibility of a December election appeared increasingly strong, Abdul Karim reiterated that the final date would depend on the Premier’s decision and the subsequent arrangements made by the EC. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Oct 17: A personal promise to keep competing until he claimed first place paid off for 17-year-old Christian Richardson Donald, who has struck gold in the Youth Category of DayakDaily’s 2026 Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition after two earlier attempts.

The Bidayuh teenager from Kuching won the Gold Award with his story, The Stone Mountain of Bau, inspired by a legend passed down through his family.

“Actually, I made a bet with myself that I would keep joining this competition until I win first place,” he said when met by DayakDaily after the award ceremony at a hotel here today.

Having achieved his goal, Christian said he might not participate again, although he remained open to joining the adult category next year if time allowed.

He said his third attempt allowed him to write more freely, making his win an unexpected surprise.

The inspiration for his winning story came from a casual question to his father while they were travelling back to their hometown in Bau.

Christian said they were passing Dorod Kapow, now known as Fairy Cave, when he jokingly asked his father whether there was a folktale behind the mountain.

His father then shared a story told by his grandmother, Sumug, about how the mountain was once a longhouse before it transformed into a limestone formation.

Christian said the account caught his interest and became the foundation for his competition entry, which he developed with his own creative interpretation.

“I decided to put my own spin on the story. I do not think I changed much because there are many variations of the story among Dayak people. That was where I got my inspiration,” he said.

For his winning entry, Christian received a certificate, trophy, RM2,500 cash prize and a three-day, two-night stay at Imperial Hotel. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Oct 17: Sarawak’s rich folklore risks fading into obscurity as people become increasingly engrossed in social media and global content, potentially knowing more about the wider world than the legends and stories rooted in their own communities.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said traditional stories needed to be documented and preserved before time erased them, especially as younger generations gravitated toward digital entertainment.

He cited the legend of Puteri Santubong as an example, noting that while many people knew the name, they might not know the story behind the legendary figure.

“Nowadays, we watch TikTok every day, (and) short movies only. We forget our own folklore,” he said during a press conference after officiating the Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony organised by DayakDaily at Imperial Hotel here today.

Abdul Karim said Sarawak’s diverse ethnic communities have their own folklore, including many Orang Ulu groups, whose stories deserve to be recorded and passed down to future generations.

“The continued existence of our communities, ethnic groups, and cultural identities is partly rooted in these folk tales, which once served as a source of entertainment during a time when we did not have Facebook or today’s digital technologies,” Abdul Karim added.

He stressed that documenting these tales in books and other forms was important to ensure they remained part of each community’s cultural identity as Sarawak continues to develop.

While social media has exposed people to information and stories from around the world, Abdul Karim said more effort was needed to help them understand their own communities’ heritage and traditions.

He also suggested using modern technology to bring Sarawak’s folklore to a wider, even global, audience, allowing traditional stories to reach new generations through contemporary platforms.

On producing more folklore books, Abdul Karim said his ministry was prepared to support future efforts, including easing the financial burden of organising competitions, awarding prizes, and publishing books.

Using the Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition organised by DayakDaily and the Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) as an example, he hoped that the initiative would continue to encourage more people, including students and those outside the literary profession, to write and document Sarawak’s folklore. — DayakDaily

PUSA, 17 Oct: Batang Saribas 2 Bridge in Pusa is expected to open to traffic on December 5, thus strengthening the connectivity network and boosting local economic activity.

Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, said the 2.43 kilometre bridge will be an important facility in facilitating population movement and opening up more economic opportunities in the area.

"We want these infrastructure facilities to be fully utilized. As connections between the areas improve, agricultural and fisheries products are easier to market, business can grow and more visitors have the opportunity to come to Pusa.

"These are among the development benefits that need to translate into increased incomes and people's well-being", he said.

The text of his speech was read by Deputy Prime Minister Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embassy, at the 2026 Tandang Sari Regatta Inauguration Meeting in Tandang Sari Square, here today.

Brother Johari said the opening of Batang Saribas Bridge 1 in July 2025, Krian River Bridge in March last year and Lupar Bridge 1 last May were also important developments in improving connectivity between areas in the part.

In related developments, a total of 46 development projects worth RM205 million are being implemented in the DUN area of Beting Maro through the BDDA.

The project covers infrastructure development, social and women affairs, agro-food, entrepreneurship, utilities and tourism.

He said that the Government of Sarawak is committed to ensuring development is implemented comprehensively and in a balanced manner through the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), to strengthen the economy, create employment opportunities and improve people's living standards.

He said the Sarawak Budget 2027 allocated about RM10.098 billion for development spending, including RM6.4 billion for rural development.

Regarding the Tandang Sari Regatta, he said that the event was not just a boat race but a local heritage reflecting spirit of solidarity, courage and cooperation.

He said the regatta promotion has the potential to become a tourist attraction by highlighting the heritage and culture of Pusa people, as well as promoting traditional food, local produce and crafting.

"The benefits of the event were not only felt by the participants, but also by small traders, food entrepreneurs and local communities", he said.

The party's chief spokesman, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the expectation was made based on the expiry of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) term.

However, he said that the decision regarding the dissolution of DUN is subject to the discretion of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, while the date setting for the election is under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC).

According to him, GPS is preparing for the upcoming PRN and believes that the coalition can cope with political competition, including from opposition parties.

"Our preparation, thank God, we know this is an election year and I dare say we are ready.

"I also dare to say, not only GPS, the opposition is ready", he said during a press conference after the Dayak Daily Writing Awards ceremony here today.

Abdul Karim was asked to comment on the allegations of certain parties who expected the Sarawak PRN to be held on December 19.

Commenting on the GPS preparations, he said that the coalition will face elections unitedly and is confident of being able to retain control of all DUN seats based on the performance of its representatives.

She also anticipated changes in the GPS candidate list, including giving women and youth leaders opportunities.

He said the election of candidates will take into account the performance of existing representatives as well as the need to make changes to ensure that the coalition continues to gain voter support.

He said the unre-nominated MPs are expected to continue supporting the newly elected candidates in the interest of the party.

KUCHING: Asajaya assemblyman, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will leave it to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to decide whether he should defend the Asajaya seat in the coming state election, which he has represented for 25 years.

The Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister said he remained close to the people of Asajaya, with many of his long-standing relationships with constituents having developed beyond politics into genuine friendships.

While he would prefer to continue serving the constituency if given the choice, he said he was prepared to make way for a younger candidate if that was what the party wanted.

“If the party and the Premier still want me to remain, I am willing to accept the responsibility,” he said during a press conference after the DayakDaily writing competition awards ceremony at Imperial Hotel, today.

He also pledged to support whoever was chosen to contest the seat, stressing that the party’s decision would take precedence over his personal preference.

Abdul Karim said development in Asajaya would continue through new plans and projects beyond each five-year term, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to improve the constituency.

Among the ongoing and planned developments in the wider Samarahan area were a waterfront project, a proposed new administrative centre, a boulevard project, an elevated highway and the airport.

On Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) prospects in the coming election, Abdul Karim said the people would ultimately determine whether the coalition could secure all 82 seats in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

He said GPS won 76 seats in the last state election, with the number subsequently increasing to 80 following the entry of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) members into the coalition through Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

“Of course, if we can win 100 per cent, we will be very, very happy,” he said.

Abdul Karim attributed GPS’ confidence to Sarawak’s political stability, strong state administration and unity among its diverse communities.

He said Sarawak’s administration, particularly in terms of financial management and governance, had received recognition not only locally but also from rating agencies and international leaders seeking opportunities to work with the state.

He urged voters to recognise the state’s achievements and continue supporting GPS, adding that the coalition had its own mechanisms to ensure accountability even if it won every seat.

These included the state’s Ombudsman Unit and GPS backbenchers, whom he said could act as a pressure group to scrutinise the administration and ensure it functioned effectively.

On the possibility of GPS winning seats uncontested, Abdul Karim said this was unlikely, adding that electoral contests could provide a clearer indication of public support for candidates.

“That is very unlikely. However, I can tell you that, based on the sentiment on the ground, the people would want to see a contest.

“Having a contest can also be beneficial. If there is no contest, even if the GPS candidate is good and wins, we will not know the actual level of support for that candidate.

“That is why it is good to have a contest, provided it is conducted responsibly and in a proper manner,” he said.

The podium training session allowed the gymnasts to familiarise themselves with the apparatus and competition arena ahead of their events.

KUCHING, Oct 17: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Information chief Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has rejected the notion of “white”, “grey” and “black” seats in the coming Sarawak election, saying Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) must treat every constituency as important and ensure voters are represented by the best possible candidates.

He said the coalition could not afford to take any seat for granted, regardless of how confident it might be of winning it.

“We should not say this is a white seat, this is a grey seat or this is a black seat. Every seat is important. We cannot take chances. Even if some people say, ‘You could put up a cow’s picture and still win.’ No, we must respect the voters and their judgement. They deserve the best elected representatives,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating DayakDaily’s Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony at Imperial Hotel here today.

Abdul Karim, who is also the assemblyman for Asajaya, said replacing long-serving incumbents was part of the party’s succession planning, stressing that no elected representative should consider themselves indispensable.

“Nobody can claim that without me, this constituency will not be able to develop or improve. Nobody can make that claim,” he said.

He said voters should understand that candidate changes were sometimes necessary to ensure continuity, adding that outgoing representatives should continue to support their successors.

“Sometimes, even if their hearts and souls want to retain the incumbent, the party also has its own plans, not just for now but for the future, to ensure continuity,” he said.

On GPS’ prospects in the coming election, he expressed confidence that the coalition could retain at least a two-thirds majority in the 82-seat Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS), and potentially secure three-quarters of the seats.

However, he acknowledged that some constituencies would require greater attention, particularly where grassroots concerns had arisen over the performance of incumbent representatives.

He said the coalition would have to assess such issues carefully and consider replacing representatives who had not fulfilled their responsibilities adequately.

On the allocation of seats among GPS component parties, including overlapping constituencies involving the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), he said the matter would be decided by the coalition’s top leadership.

Abdul Karim, who serves as the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, also said candidate selection should make room for younger people and women, adding that new faces were expected in every election as part of efforts to ensure the party’s long-term continuity. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Oct 17: Sarawak’s vibrant storytelling heritage has taken a monumental leap forward with the official launch of “Sarawak Folklore Book I”, a compendium meticulously brought to fruition through a collaborative partnership between the Persatuan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) and Amber Publishing House Sdn Bhd (Amber).

The landmark publication was officially launched today by the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, during DayakDaily’s 2026 “Sarawak Folklore” Writing Competition Award Ceremony held at the Imperial Hotel Kuching.

Also present to witness the momentous occasion were MTCP Deputy Permanent Secretary Julin Alen, Pewarta advisor Wilfred Syed Pilo, Imperial Hotel Sales and Marketing Director Irene Tan, and DayakDaily chief editor Karen Bong.

Spearheaded by Pewarta with the steadfast support of the Ministry’s facilitation fund unit, the newly minted volume represents a crucial cultural safeguard designed to protect generational myths, family histories, and community roots from fading in a rapidly modernising world.

This initiative by Pewarta emphasised the urgent need to transition rich oral narratives into permanent print. Given Sarawak’s vast and vibrant collection of folklore, it is only right that these stories are celebrated, preserved, and converted into print.

With this book to stand against the tide of modernisation, the association is ensuring that its rich heritage, generational myths, and family histories are protected for generations to come, reminding everyone of the deep roots that ground the community.

The publication of “Sarawak Folklore Book I” is the result of a dedicated joint effort between Pewarta and Amber, working closely alongside the DayakDaily team.

The comprehensive volume features a rich assembly of cultural narratives, including all top 20 winning stories from DayakDaily’s 2026 writing competition themed “Sarawak Folklore”, complemented by 13 carefully curated stories drawn from DayakDaily’s annual D’Drift expeditions.

KUCHING, Oct 17: After 25 years representing Asajaya, Asajaya assemblyman Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says he would prefer to remain in the constituency, where he has built close ties with residents, but is prepared to step aside if the Premier and party leadership decide to make way for a younger successor.

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Information chief said his longstanding relationship with constituents had made Asajaya more than just a constituency to him, as he now regarded many of its residents as friends rather than merely voters.

“After 25 years, they have become friends. I no longer look at them as voters; I look at them as friends,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating DayakDaily’s Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony at Imperial Hotel here today.

He said the decision on whether he would defend the seat in the coming Sarawak election rested with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the party leadership.

“If there are suggestions or views from young people to take over, I am prepared to give up. I am prepared to give up and support whoever is going to be there,” he said.

However, when asked whether he would prefer to contest in Asajaya or another constituency, he said he would choose to remain in the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) seat if given the option, citing his close relationship with the local community.

“When you are so close to somebody and then you are asked to go somewhere else, if given a choice, I would still want to be in my own area because I like the area,” he said.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, said he was willing to accept the party’s decision on his candidacy.

He also stressed that development in Asajaya would continue regardless of whether he remained as its elected representative, as new leaders would have to take responsibility for ongoing projects and future plans.

“There is no such thing as development in Asajaya being completed,” he said, pointing to ongoing and planned projects in the wider Samarahan area, including a waterfront, a new administrative centre, a boulevard, an elevated highway and an airport.

He said development was a continuous process with new programmes and projects expected to be planned as existing initiatives progressed.

He added that the party would need to consider succession and continuity when selecting candidates, with younger leaders and women also deserving opportunities to serve. — DayakDaily

KUCHING, Oct 17: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) line-up for the coming 13th Sarawak Election (PRN13) should include at least 10 per cent new faces, says the party’s Information chief Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said some degree of candidate turnover was necessary in every election, adding that retaining the same line-up without changes would not reflect well on the party or the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

“I believe that in every election, there will always be a certain number of candidates who are changed. At least 10 per cent must be changed.

“If there is no change, it will not look good for the party or even for GPS,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating the Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony organised by DayakDaily at Imperial Hotel here today.

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, further said the selection of candidates was usually left to the party’s top leadership, with the need to bring in women and young people among the factors to be considered.

He said a convention or understanding existed for women and young people to make up between 10 and 30 per cent of new candidates, adding that these considerations would have to be taken into account by Sarawak Premier and GPS chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Asked whether there could be seat changes involving PBB assemblymen in the coming election, Abdul Karim said the decision rested with Abang Johari as the party’s president.

“That is the prerogative of the Premier and the party. There might be changes, there might not be. But the fact is that young people will definitely be brought forward,” he said.

He also stressed that women should not be overlooked for leadership positions, saying they had proven their capabilities in various roles.

“We cannot put aside women leaders. We have to adopt the world outlook that, to lead a party, a State or a country, there must be women.

“They have been doing very well. I have many women in my ministry, and I can see that they are doing very well. Put them as leaders in the State, and they will perform,” he said. — DayakDaily

Beyond celebrating literary talent, the writing competition serves a deeper purpose: to foster a genuine love for writing while preserving Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, traditional lifestyles, and intimate family stories.

This encourages writers to capture the heart of community traditions, indigenous legends, and personal bonds, ensuring that these invaluable cultural narratives are kept alive and passed down for generations to come.

Among the distinguished guests present were Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Permanent Secretary Julin Alen, Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) president Peter Sibon, and DayakDaily director Lian Cheng.

The writing competition was organised by DayakDaily, generously backed by MTCP, and supported by the Imperial Hotel, Kuching, with their sponsorship of the 3D2N stay vouchers. – DayakDaily

KUCHING, 17 Oct: SPM Reduction Programme 2026: STEM becomes an important platform to help students prepare more fully for the Malaysian Certificate of Teaching (SPM) exam especially in academic, mental and psychological aspects.

Deputy Minister in Sarawak's Premier Department (Coordinator of Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that thorough preparation is essential to ensure students can face the exams with confidence and get excellent results.

According to him, SPM's decision is one of the important factors determining the direction of education and career of students in the future.

"Students need to make preparations in all aspects including physical, mental and psychological to ensure they are truly prepared for the challenges of the exam", he said.

He said this while addressing the Closing Meeting of SPM 2026: STEM Reduction Program at Tun Abang Haji Openg High School, today. A total of 128 students from 5 schools in DUN N.4 Peace Beach area will be taking part in SPM this year.

I'm going to see Dr. Abdul Rahman explained that efforts to strengthen education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields are also aligned with Sarawak's aspiration to become a developed state by 2030.

According to him, development of Sarawak is not only focused on physical progress but also needs to be supported by highly skilled human capital capable of meeting industrial needs and driving the state's economic growth.

He said technological developments including hydrogen-based urban transportation systems and aerospace exploration opened up new opportunities for younger generations to pursue highly skilled careers.

He also touched on the planning of aerospace development in Sarawak including efforts to generate skilled energy capable of supporting future satellite technology and related sector development.

"All these developments require a workforce with knowledge and skills in science and technology. Therefore, students need to take the opportunity to immerse themselves in the field", he said.

In the meantime, he said, career prospects in science, technology and engineering are expected to continue to grow along with industrial development in Sarawak.

For example, he said that the petrochemical and gas sector in Bintulu requires skilled professional staff including engineers to ensure smooth industrial operations.

In this regard, he urged the students to make full use of the SPM preparation programme implemented including mentoring sessions and knowledge sharing with teachers and faculty.

I'm going to see Dr. Abdul Rahman also shared his personal experience in science education as an encouragement to students not to give up on pursuing their ideals.

He said that success requires hard work, discipline and self-confidence.

He hoped that the programme would help improve SPM 2026 achievements especially among students in the affected areas, thus producing more graduates who could potentially contribute to Sarawak's development.-TVS

MIRI: A woman here lost RM97,000 after a fraudster used her husband’s profile photograph to impersonate him on WhatsApp and trick her into transferring money.

Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 17) that the woman received WhatsApp messages on October 16 from an unknown number displaying her husband’s profile picture.

Believing the messages were from her husband, she made two online transfers totalling RM97,000 to separate bank accounts.

The transfers, made through company accounts, amounted to RM48,000 and RM49,000.

The scam was discovered when the woman checked with her husband about the payments.

He denied requesting the transfers, and further checks showed that the number did not belong to him.

The WhatsApp conversation subsequently disappeared, according to the police statement.

The woman then contacted the banks involved to request action against the accounts linked to the transactions.

The case was reported at Miri Central Police Station and is being investigated under Section 420 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which deals with cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

Police warn the public against impersonation scams

Police urged the public to remain vigilant against scams in which fraudsters impersonate friends or family members using their profile photographs to gain the victims’ trust.

Members of the public should verify requests for money directly with the person concerned through a separate, trusted communication channel before making any transfer.

Police also warned against transferring money to third-party accounts without proper verification.

Those who suspect they have been scammed should retain transaction records and other relevant evidence.

The public can check suspicious telephone numbers and bank accounts through the Royal Malaysia Police’s Semak Mule portal at http://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before making financial transactions.

Further information on current scam tactics is available through the Royal Malaysia Police’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department and Sarawak’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department.

MIRI: A 56-year-old man has reported an alleged property purchase scam involving five houses in Kuching, claiming losses of RM363,887.49.

Police said the case was reported at Miri Central Police Station on October 15 and is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

According to the complaint, the man had known the suspect through work and friendship for about two years before being offered five houses in Taman Abadi, Kuching, in November 2025.

The properties were allegedly presented as bank auction houses available below market prices, with the suspect offering to handle the purchase process, including the sale and purchase agreements and transfer of ownership.

The complainant said he made several payments between November 2025 and January 2026 for the properties, deposits, land surveying and matters related to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN).

However, the transactions were not completed as promised, and he had yet to receive complete documents proving ownership of the properties despite repeatedly seeking clarification, according to the complaint.

Police are investigating the status of the properties, the flow of payments and the possible involvement of other parties.

Miri district police chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah urged the public to exercise caution when buying properties, particularly bank auction units offered at unusually low prices.

He advised prospective buyers to verify property ownership through official channels, check all relevant documents, and consult qualified lawyers before making payments.

The public was also warned against transferring money to third-party accounts without proper verification, and advised to retain transaction records.

Police recommended checking suspicious telephone numbers and bank accounts through the Check Scammers CCID service or the Semak Mule portal at http://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before making financial transactions.

KUCHING: The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) could be dissolved soon, paving the way for the state election, as the window for calling the polls narrows, said Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said the election was likely to be held in December, given the time needed for the Election Commission (EC) to make preparations and the limited window remaining before the end of the year.

“The DUN’s term ends in December because the last state election was held in December. However, under election law, when a state assembly is dissolved or reaches the end of its five-year term, it is automatically dissolved.

“The other way is for the Premier, as the case may be, to dissolve the assembly. When it is dissolved, the Election Commission (EC) must be informed. Under the Election Act, the EC must call an election within 60 days.

“That is why some people say the election could be held as late as February, while others say it must be held in December. Personally, I would consider December the end of the five-year term.” he said during a press conference after the DayakDaily writing competition awards ceremony at Imperial Hotel, today.

Abdul Karim said speculation that the election could take place on December 12 or 19 was plausible, as both dates fell on weekends, when elections were commonly held.

He said the remaining timeframe was becoming increasingly narrow, with November and the first half of December representing the most practical window for the election.

He also pointed to the challenges of holding the polls in January or February, given the expected Chinese New Year celebrations and Ramadan, as well as the year-end holiday period in December.

” I believe any Menteri Besar, Premier or Chief Minister would want to determine the timing of the dissolution themselves rather than allow the assembly to be automatically dissolved.

“This is partly because circumstances might suddenly become unfavourable if the assembly is automatically dissolved. There could be an emergency, haze or flooding, for example, which would make it difficult to manage the situation and take the necessary corrective measures,” he said.

On GPS’ readiness for the coming election, the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) information chief said the ruling coalition was prepared to face the polls, adding that opposition parties were also making their preparations.

“It is no longer a surprise. It is already an open secret. We are simply waiting for the signal to be given by the Premier,” he said.

He said GPS was confident of retaining at least a two-thirds majority, or potentially three-quarters of the seats, as in the previous state election.

However, he acknowledged that certain constituencies would require closer attention because of grassroots issues and concerns over the performance of incumbent elected representatives.

Abdul Karim also said some changes to the candidate line-up could be expected, noting that replacing a proportion of candidates was necessary to maintain the party’s appeal and strengthen its electoral prospects.

He added that the selection of candidates was a matter for the party’s top leadership, with the need to consider greater representation of women and young people.

KUCHING: The proposal to set up a dedicated agency to monitor implementation of Rural Transformation Projects (RTPs) would speed up project delivery.

Stakan assemblyman, Datuk Hamzah Brahim said the proposal raised in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) was not only his own, but also supported by other assemblymen.

“Implementation at constituency level had been slower than hoped, as the state government had a large budget and many projects to deliver.

“An agency focused solely on the project would help turn the government’s commitments into visible results more quickly, so the people could see the purpose of each project,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the STEPS: CSR 2026 programme at Kampung Jawa Semenggok Lama today (Oct. 17).

Hamzah said delays were often seen as the failure of the government and elected representatives, who were then pressed to follow up with the leadership.

On Stakan, he described the constituency as harmonious and multiracial, with no dominant race, and said he aimed to keep it that way.

When he took office, he said, the main issues were flooding and low water pressure.

He reiterated that both were expected to be resolved soon, with the support of the state government.

On the UNIMAS programme, Hamzah called it a “win-win situation”, as students learnt about village life while residents benefited from the expertise of graduates.

He hoped such programmes would be held consistently in Stakan villages, particularly to share information on health and household financial management with housewives.

KUCHING, Oct 17: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is unlikely to secure many uncontested wins in the coming 13th Sarawak election (PRN13), with voters themselves wanting to see candidates tested at the ballot box, says Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Responding to a question on how many seats GPS could win uncontested, the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Information chief said such an outcome was “very unlikely”.

“Uncontested is very unlikely. But I can tell you the feeling on the ground, they would want to see a contest also,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating DayakDaily’s Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition Awards Ceremony held at Imperial Hotel here today.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts as well as Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, further said contests were healthy because they allowed candidates to gauge the true extent of their public support, regardless of who eventually emerged victorious.

“If it is uncontested, sometimes the candidate, whether from GPS or whoever wins, will not know how big their support is.

“That is why it is good to have a contest,” he said.

The last Sarawak State election to see candidates returned unopposed was in 2016, when two Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates won the Bukit Sari and Bukit Kota seats without a contest.

GPS was formed in 2018 after Barisan Nasional’s dissolution in Sarawak. — DayakDaily

KUCHING: Childcare centres (TASKA) are advised to suspend outdoor activities during the haze, while parents should assess the situation before deciding whether to send their children to the centres.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that no directive had been issued by the ministry to close TASKA centres, as the decision could affect parents who rely on childcare services while working.

“For TASKA, most activities take place indoors. We have not issued any declaration or instruction to close the centres,” she told reporters after officiating the EmpowerUS 2026 Seminar Programme at the State Library here today (Oct 17).

However, she said TASKA centres should follow suit if the respective state authorities had announced school closures due to the haze.

“For those who are sending their children to TASKA centres that remain open, I would advise that there should be no outdoor activities,” she said.

Nancy added that parents should use their discretion in deciding whether to send their children to childcare centres, acknowledging that some might not have alternative arrangements for their children while they were at work.

“Perhaps parents could discuss the matter with their employers or the TASKA centres to determine the best way forward,” she said.

She added that each state had its own committee to decide whether schools should remain open or close, while decisions involving TASKA centres rested with the centres and parents.

“Our advice is to keep children indoors and avoid all outdoor activities. If any children are unwell, please take them to see a doctor,” she stressed.

KUCHING: A collection of Sarawak’s traditional tales and oral histories has been preserved in print with the launch of ‘Sarawak Folklore Book I’, featuring 33 stories celebrating the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The book, launched by the Persatuan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) in collaboration with DayakDaily, comprises all 20 winning entries from the 2026 Sarawak Folklore Writing Competition and 13 stories curated from DayakDaily’s annual D’Drift expeditions.

The launch took place during the competition’s awards ceremony at Imperial Hotel today, officiated by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The competition, jointly organised by DayakDaily and Pewarta with support from the ministry, attracted 185 submissions from across Sarawak, encouraging writers to document indigenous folklore, family histories and oral traditions through essays of fewer than 800 words accompanied by original photographs.

In the adult category for participants aged 19 and above, Ivy Lau Chien Jie from Sibu won gold with ‘The Crimson Covenant’, while Roslee Bahar took silver with ‘The Birth of the Nightjar’, while Harry Bawan won bronze with ‘The Legend of Darud Batuh Budak’.

In the youth category for those aged 12 to 18, Christian Richardson Donald from Bau clinched gold with a modern retelling of the legend of Dorod Kapow, while Bernard Yong Qian Ze secured silver with ‘A Legacy at Jong’s’, while Monica Pawa Ringkai took bronze with ‘The Symphony of a Fallen Artisan’.

In the adult category, the gold winner received RM3,500, a three-day, two-night voucher at Imperial Hotel Kuching, a trophy and a certificate.

The silver and bronze winners received RM2,500 and RM1,500 respectively, along with trophies and certificates.

In the youth category, the gold winner received RM2,500 and a three-day, two-night hotel voucher, while the silver and bronze winners received RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively, together with trophies and certificates.

The 185 submissions underwent an initial screening before shortlisted entries were assessed by a three-member judging panel comprising Singapore-based Invictus Global Schoolhouse’s content writer Priscillia Pui, Joanna Yap and veteran journalist Desmond Davidson.

In his speech, Abdul Karim said Sarawak’s diverse ethnic traditions and folklore provided a strong foundation for developing a vibrant storytelling and literary culture.

He noted that the competition winners came from diverse professional backgrounds, including banking, healthcare, education, the civil service, management, homemaking, zoology and engineering, while the youth participants were students.

“This is even more remarkable because none of them are full-time writers by trade,” he said, highlighting the writing talent available across the state.

Abdul Karim also reiterated Miri’s ambition to be recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature by 2027, describing the aspiration as ambitious but achievable with sustained efforts and state support.

He said Miri could build on its cultural and historical assets, including Niah Caves and Sarawak’s diverse ethnic oral traditions, to establish a stronger literary identity beyond its role as an oil and gas hub.

“By sharing these tales through print and digital platforms, treating our streets and traditions as living storybooks brought to life by local storytellers, becoming a City of Literature is well within our reach,” he said.

Abdul Karim said the ministry was ready to support the effort, pointing to its role in facilitating the production of ‘Sarawak Folklore Book I’ as part of broader efforts to nurture a thriving literary society in the state.

MELAKA, Oct 17: Sarawak has the potential to strengthen the country's cocoa industry through expansion of cultivation area and production of high value added chocolate products, thus helping to reduce the supply gap for dried cocoa beans that are now heavily dependent on imports over the next two to three years.

Acting Director General of the Malaysian Cocoa Board Shari Fuddin Sha'ari said efforts to expand coconut cultivation in Sarawak, apart from Sabah, a major producer state, could boost local raw material supply when new crops start producing.

He said that the expansion of the industry should also be accompanied by efforts to strengthen the cultivation activities so that farmers can not only rely on the sale of dried coconut seeds, but instead can explore processing for chocolate products offering higher added value.

"We see a lot more potential in the cocoa industry chain. From dried cocoa beans, we can produce chocolate products and bring the processing technology to interested farmers and entrepreneurs", he said as he met at the inaugural A Malaysian Cocoa Affair 2026 here today.

Earlier, the inauguration was done by Minister of Agriculture and Commodities Dr Noraini Ahmad.

Shari Fuddin said that the Malaysian Cocoa Board is also pioneering the production of cocoa-based chocolate products from Sarawak through an approachsingle origin (single source), with dried coconut seeds from four locations processed at the Cluster Cooperative Research Centre in Samara City.

"Coconut seeds from different locations have distinct taste and aroma characteristics that are influenced by factors such as growing areas and processing methods, thus opening the door to chocolate production with a unique identity.

"This uniqueness can be used by traders to produce a variety of chocolate formulations, including blending local cocoa beans with ingredients such as Melaka sugar", he said.

He said the approach also has the potential to attract more entrepreneurs, especially younger generations to venture into the cocoa industry by focusing on innovation, product development and marketing.

Meanwhile, Shari Fuddin said the farmers' interest in cultivating cocoa crops is still encouraging, with some of them also applying for help to start or expand cultivation.

He said the allocations received under the latest Malaysia Plan (RMK) also supported efforts to expand cocoa crop area, thus giving the industry an opportunity to continue growing.

"Increased local production is expected to reduce the supply gap for dry cocoa beans from abroad. It also creates greater economic opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs through the production of waste products", he said. -TVS

The Crimson Covenant

The water of the Seduan stream was not always the colour of rusted iron and sunset clay. In the spring of 1901, when the first pioneers stepped off the steamers into the humid embrace of Sibu, the river was a clear mirror reflecting the colour of dark tea.

My grandfather told me of a man named Lau, a pioneer whose hands were mapped by the calluses of failed harvests in the old country, who carried the heavy promise of a new life in the mud of Sarawak.

Lau was a man of iron, but the jungle was made of something older and more stubborn. For months, the pioneers struck their hoes against the earth, only to have the tropical rains wash their efforts back into the silt. The belian wood notched their axes and the fever thinned their numbers. By the second monsoon, the settlers spoke of retreat. They whispered of returning to the winter winds across the sea as men who had been swallowed by the green.

One evening, Lau stood alone at the bank of the Seduan. He looked at the clear water and saw his own reflection—gaunt, exhausted, and a stranger to the soil beneath his feet.
He dropped to his knees and struck the earth with his bare hands, a cry tearing from his throat that the jungle birds had never heard.

“We have given you our sweat,” Lau whispered to the dark bank. “We have given you our brothers. What more do you demand before you let us stay?”

The river did not remain silent. A deep vibration rose from the silt, a rhythmic pulse that travelled through the soles of his feet. Beneath the surface, a shadow shifted, too massive for a fish and too deliberate for a sunken log. The water trembled, tiny ripples turning in a tight circle around Lau’s reflection. It was the waking presence of the mud itself: the ancient guardian of the laterite clay.

“You walk upon my back like ghosts,” came a sound like grinding stones murmuring from the depths. “You take the fruit, but do not bleed for the root. To stay, you must cease being guests and become the clay.”

Lau understood. The land did not ask for prayers or sudden miracles. It demanded a piece of the men themselves.

He took his iron hoe, the last unbroken tool he owned, and struck the steep bank with a primal fury. He dug until the skin of the earth tore open, revealing the deep, bleeding crimson of the clay beneath. The jagged edge of the hoe caught his palm. He did not pull away. He pressed his torn hand into the open red earth and held it there, his warm blood seeping into the cool, damp clay.

The tropical sky cracked open and a violent downpour hammered the bank. The rain washed the red earth and Lau’s blood down into the Seduan. One by one, the other men emerged from the treeline, drawn by the sound of the rain and the sight of their brother. They did not offer words. They offered their resolve. They took up their tools and tore into the red earth, working through the storm until the clear stream ran thick and crimson.

By morning, the Seduan had changed. It was no longer a mirror for a foreign sky. It was a river of rust and fire.

When I walk through Sungai Merah today, past the Wong Nai Siong Memorial Park, I see Lau’s handprint in every ripple. I see a history that refused to be washed away by the tides.

The Rejang still flows, carrying the memory of that evening when a man stopped being a traveller and rooted himself into the soil of Sarawak. I sit by the bank and watch a young child dip their hand into the water, pulling it back to find their fingers stained a pale red that will not wash away. They laugh, unaware of the price. The river moves on, quiet with the weight of our belonging, a covenant signed in the colour of the earth. — DayakDaily

To a passing traveller, it is merely a mountain, a geological wonder of the Sarawakian landscape. But to those who still listen to the songs of the forebears, it is a monument to a hollowed-out humanity. It is a story not of stone, but of the coldness of the human heart.

Long ago, before the Krokong-Pejiru Road was paved by modern hands, a sprawling longhouse thrived upon the land. On the fringes of this bustling community lived two orphan siblings, a boy and a girl. Their parents had died before their soles even touched the earth, leaving their grandmother, Sumuk, to shoulder the burden of care.

Their home was a ramshackle bori umoh, a farmhouse that stood at a physical and social distance from the longhouse. While the community celebrated the bounty of the earth, the trio existed in a relentless cycle of threadbare clothes and empty bellies, quietly ostracised from the thriving settlement nearby.

When the season of Gawai came, the longhouse pulsed with life. The villagers held a feast of thanks for the Spirits and a plea for the coming year’s bounty. As the rhythmic thrum of gongs began to pulse through the trees, the orphans gazed from afar with a mixture of hope and hesitation. They had long yearned for belonging in their community and the dignity of a shared meal.

“Sumuk, can we go to the longhouse for the Gawai festival?” asked the girl.

“Yes, we will go in the best clothes we have,” Sumuk replied, her voice acting as a fragile shield against their poverty.

But the longhouse was no sanctuary. As the orphans stepped into the light of the celebration, the air curdled with the villagers’ disdain. To the merrymakers, the orphans were not neighbours, but a harsh blemish on their sacred gratitude to the Spirits. To hasten their departure, the villagers handed them bundles of buan leaves, claiming they were heavy with the finest meat and fish. Fooled by the villagers’ masquerade, the orphans went back to their bori umoh with naive joy.

The crushing betrayal was revealed when Sumuk unfurled the leaves. The anticipated scent of a harvest feast was replaced by the dry, metallic stench of bleached chicken bones and charred scraps of glutinous rice. It was a mockery that transcended mere bullying, a spiritual insult to the memory of the orphans’ parents and the Spirits of the land.

“They have invited their own end,” Sumuk whispered, her grief hardening into a cold, ancestral fury.

With sacred authority, she instructed the orphans to catch a black cat and a pail of water. “Dress the cat in black cloth before soaking it wet at the longhouse. Then, release it into the festival’s heart.”

She then set chicken cages upon the orphans’ heads, commanding them to keep them on lest they be claimed by the curse. “If the villagers laugh, their laughter will calcify in their throats, condemning them,” she added. “When the deed is done, flee into the night. Do not look back.”

The orphans walked, carrying Sumuk’s words with them. Retribution struck with surreal speed. Under her grim instructions, the siblings returned to the festival with the soaking black cat. As the animal darted through the longhouse, the villagers erupted in booming, arrogant laughter, mocking the orphans’ silly present. They were entirely unaware that their laughter was the final weight upon the scales of divine justice.

The orphans fled into the dark jungle just as a thunderous roar split the sky, shaking the earth beneath them. In a horrific, silent sweep, the laughter froze. One by one, flesh hardened into limestone and rice wine thickened into mud. The villagers finally realised that they had offended the Spirits, but it was too late to repent.

Within seconds, the vibrant longhouse and everyone within were calcified until the pride of the village was nothing more than a jagged monument of stone. The two orphans and Sumuk survived, their fortunes shifting as the landscape itself had.

Today, the stone mountain remains a silhouette against the Sarawak sky. I often think of those orphans when I look toward Bau. The legend endures not to frighten us, but to remind us that the most dangerous thing in this world isn’t an ancient curse; it is a heart that has forgotten how to be kind to those who have nothing left but their dignity. — DayakDaily

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Oct: The Ministry of National Unity (MNU) is reviewing proposals for improvement of the Intermediation Act 2012 to provide a clearer legislative basis to strengthen implementation of Community Mediation services under the Department of National Unity and Integration (DNIU).

The Minister on Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the scope of the Mediation Act 2012 under the provisions of the Section of Legal Affairs (BHEUU) at present does not specifically cover the operation of Community Mediation by JPNIN.

He said the mediation services as well as training and monitoring of community mediators by JPNIN are currently under Section 8 (d) of the Neighbourhood Partnership Act 2012, but that provision is still not sufficient to provide a specific framework covering the overall operation of the service.

"In this regard, I request JPNIN to hold a meeting with BHEUU to review the improvement proposals, including amendment proposals to the Intermediaries Act 2012, so that there is a clearer legal basis for the service", he said.

He said this during the inaugural meeting of the Social Collaborative Mediation Community Housing Mediation Project in Seri Kota, here today, which was also attended by MP Bandar Tun Razak who is also the wife of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Aaron also asked JPNIN along with the National Institute for Integration Studies and Training (IKLIN) to conduct a comparative study with countries with more specific community mediation legislative frameworks, including Singapore, India and Sri Lanka.

"Singapore through the Community Mediation Centres Act 1997, India through the Mediation Act 2023 and Sri Lanka through the Mediation Boards Act 1988, so this comparison is important for us to see how aspects of power, function, mediator supervision, mediation process and protection of parties involved are regulated by law", he said.

Meanwhile, he said the government will continue to expand the network of Community Mediation Centres through the establishment of 12 new centers this year in strategic locations across the country including Kota Kinabalu, Sabah; Miri, Sarawak; Pontian, Johor; Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu; and Shah Alam, Selangor.

"This centre will be a community reference centre for information, early counselling services and solutions to relevant community issues and disputes.

"This approach allows conflicts to be identified and addressed at an early stage, before escalating into more serious disputes and affecting relationships within the community", he said.

Regarding the Municipal Series Public Housing Community Mediation Center, Aaron said that the center is JPNIN's 11th community mediation center which was selected based on several factors, including population close to 6,000 people, local facilities available, community demand and need to address neighborhood issues in the field.

He said the establishment of the centre is also a continuation of the resolution proposal of the Strategic Workshop on K2K Development Initiatives hosted by Think City together with government agencies and stakeholders in 2024. -TVS

KUCHING, Oct 17: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) inspection of the Flying Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter operated by Layang Layang Aerospace Sdn Bhd that crashed in Long Lellang last month found no unclear records or flaws in its aircraft maintenance.

In a news report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) published on Friday (Oct 16), Layang Layang group managing director Johan Poong Abdullah said the preliminary report on the helicopter crash found that the maintenance and management of all aircraft in Layang Layang’s stable were in order.

“The Air Accident Investigation Bureau’s report clearly stated that all related paperwork on the helicopter’s maintenance was in order. More information will be included in the final report,” he told FMT.

Quoting the report, Johan said the pilot held the appropriate licence, qualifications, and approvals required to conduct the flight in accordance with the applicable regulations.

“The pilot held a valid medical certificate and was medically fit to conduct the flight. The helicopter was determined to be airworthy at the time of dispatch and held valid certificates of registration and airworthiness,” he said.

On Thursday (Oct 15), Minister of Transport Loke Siew Fook said in the Dewan Rakyat that CAAM flagged three maintenance issues during an inspection of Layang Layang’s maintenance operations from Sept 1 to 4, and follow-up checks completed on Sept 6, two days before the crash.

Loke said the three issues concerned the company’s maintenance staffing plans, unclear records of certain scheduled maintenance checks, and inadequate written procedures for continuing operations after an emergency.

He said two of the issues had been resolved, while the third, involving the company’s calculation of staffing needs, was still pending final verification by CAAM when the crash occurred.

Johan said the inspection was a routine check for all aircraft operators before renewing their licences, adding that the three issues raised were unrelated to maintenance by its aircraft engineers.

He said the company renewed its operating licences for another three years after the inspection, before the crash.

“The parts about the maintenance staff planning and unclear records of scheduled checks have been clarified, and CAAM has accepted our clarification and adjustments.

“As for the issue of how the company calculated its staffing needs, we have explained that Layang Layang has enough manpower to operate its companies both in the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

The helicopter crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing (STOLport) in Ulu Baram on Sept 8, killing all five on board—pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, 30; medical officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, 33; assistant medical officer Alexson Adit Henry, 31; and staff nurses Debra Moset, 40, and Jessie Paya Jok, 44. — DayakDaily

KUCHING: Johan “Jojo” Ghazali did not leave much room for debate this time.

Back at Lumpinee Stadium with a score to settle, the Sarawak-based fighter turned a previous split-decision defeat to Diego Paez into a unanimous decision win in the flyweight muaythai co-main event of The Inner Circle 35 on Friday (Oct 16).

Their first meeting had gone Paez’s way by the narrowest of margins.

The rematch looked different almost immediately.

Jojo came out compact and patient behind a tight guard, touching Paez with the jab before driving kicks into the body and picking his moments to step in.

Paez answered with a left hook and a sharp knee, but Ghazali was reading the exchanges better and finished the opening round strongly with an elbow as the Colombian-American tried to hold his ground.

The second round was where Jojo really began to take control.

He walked Paez down without rushing, mixed body punches with overhand rights and stayed composed when Paez tried to disrupt the rhythm with a spinning attack.

There was less wasted movement, less chasing.

Just pressure with purpose.

A clean one-two near the end of the round summed up the difference between this fight and the first – Jojo was not simply throwing more, he was choosing his moments better.

Paez tried to pull the fight into the clinch in the final round, but Ghazali broke away and went straight back to working the head and body.

Both fighters traded until the bell, but the sharper work had already been done.

This time, all three judges went Jojo’s way.

The win snapped a two-fight losing streak and improved his professional record to 28-11.

BINTULU: Muaythai could help instil discipline and curb bullying among students if its training is accompanied by lessons in responsibility and respect.

Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the combat sport offered more than physical exercise, as it could help young people develop self-control and understand the responsibility that came with learning martial arts.

“I hope muaythai training can be introduced in schools because the sport not only provides good physical exercise but also teaches students discipline.

“I do not want to see them misuse the skills they learn to bully others or settle conflicts in school,” he said.

Pang was speaking to reporters during the 10th edition of the Muaythai Premier Sarawak Cup at NAIM Street Mall Paragon on Friday night (Oct 16).

He stressed that martial arts skills must be used responsibly and should never become a means of intimidating others or settling personal conflicts.

Pang also pointed to Sarawak’s success at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), where the state emerged as the overall muaythai champion with five gold medals, as evidence of its ability to produce high-level athletes.

He hoped the achievement would inspire more young people to take up the sport, develop their abilities, and represent Sarawak in future competitions.

KUCHING: The proposed TEGAS Lodge Sarawak (TLS) will form part of the TEGAS Digital Village’s Phase Two expansion at Sama Jaya High Tech Park, complementing its digital learning, innovation and entrepreneurship facilities with accommodation.

Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak’s (TEGAS) Chairman, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said TLS would allow programme participants and digital nomads to stay and work at the site while interacting with local and international talent.

“People can work there, stay there and exchange ideas, not only with local digital nomads but also those from overseas. It will be a one-stop centre where people can work and stay,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

Len Talif said the expansion would address growing demand for the Digital Village’s facilities, with only about five acres of its approximately 20-acre site developed so far.

He said the proposed TLS, targeted for completion in 2029 or 2030, would offer short-term and long-term accommodation, supported by amenities such as food outlets, a gym and recreational facilities.

“Initially, we did not know what the response would be. Alhamdulillah, now we are running out of space.

“With the allocation provided by the state government, I will make it a personal mission to ensure the TLS is completed,” he said.

Len Talif said he raised the idea of accommodation with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a Shell LiveWIRE programme attended by primary school pupils from his constituency.

He said improved connectivity had enabled more pupils from outside Kuching to visit the city, thus highlighting the potential for accommodation to support educational visits to the Digital Village.

“I jokingly said it would be nice if we had a lodge or hostel here. When the Premier concluded the event, he announced his agreement. It was a pleasant surprise,” he said.

The Phase Two expansion also envisages dedicated accommodation for digital nomads to encourage longer stays and interaction within the Digital Village.

The plans support efforts to attract talent through state initiatives such as the e-Residency scheme.

KUCHING: TEGAS plans to introduce a community smart farming programme and upgrade its student satellite challenge in 2027, broadening young Sarawakians’ exposure to agricultural technology and aerospace engineering.

Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak’s (TEGAS) Chairman, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the initiatives would strengthen practical learning under TEGAS Community Innovative Learning (TCIL), supported by its RM12.5-million allocation under the Sarawak Budget 2027.

“In 2027, we plan to introduce the TEGAS Community PlayFarm, integrating STEM, IoT-based smart farming, renewable energy and sustainability through hands-on learning.

“We will also upgrade the Sarawak Rocketeer CanSatChallenge to the Sarawak Rocketeer CubeSat Challenge, expanding students’ exposure to satellite technology and aerospace engineering,” he said to Sarawak Tribune.

Len Talif said the programmes would build on existing efforts such as STEM Playground and Think & Tinker Mini Lab, while strengthening students’ innovation and problem-solving skills.

He said expanding access for rural communities remained a priority, with TCIL conducting more than 20 rural outreach programmes annually and its Think & Tinker Mini Lab covering 25 rural school locations.

“Through hands-on STEM and digital activities, including our Think & Tinker Mini Lab in 25 rural school locations, we provide students with opportunities to develop practical skills.

“These initiatives will further develop young Sarawakians’ innovation and problem-solving skills while expanding our outreach, particularly to rural communities,” he said.

Len Talif said outreach would continue expanding in 2027 through Digital Innovation for All (DIfA), introducing students to STEM, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and future career pathways.

The Community Innovation Literacy (COMIL) Programme would also encourage students to develop digital solutions to challenges faced by their communities.

“Through these initiatives and strategic partnerships, we aim to ensure that more rural students can access STEM and digital learning opportunities and develop the skills needed for future careers in technology and innovation.

“By expanding our programmes across Sarawak, we will make sure our youths, no matter where they live, get the skills and support they need to succeed in the digital economy,” he said.

KUCHING: Ethical, resilient and sustainable leadership is increasingly important as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies reshape workplaces and decision-making.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stressed the importance of accountability, human oversight and trust as AI systems develop capabilities to perform increasingly complex tasks.

She said leadership must combine innovation with integrity, resilience and respect for people, drawing a parallel with Sarawak’s traditional pua kumbu weaving.

She also said the intricate artistry of the pua kumbu offers a meaningful reflection on leadership in which each individual thread carries purpose, yet the structural beauty and strength of the tapestry depend on how harmoniously those threads are woven together.

“In much the same way, progress is sustained when innovation is woven together with integrity, resilience and respect for people.

“These are not qualities reserved solely for people in high office but they also matter equally across universities, businesses, public institutions and community organisations. We earn trust not simply through what we promise, but through how consistently we act,” she said.

She said this when officiating the EmpowerUS 2026 Seminar Programme at the State Library here today (Oct 17).

Nancy, who is also the Patron of Ohio University Alumni, highlighted the role of inclusive social development in Malaysia’s progress, saying national strength should be reflected not only in economic performance but also in opportunities for women, resilient families and the dignity of all members of society.

“In this regard, the recently announced Budget 2027 reflects the government’s continued commitment to ensuring that social development remains an integral part of Malaysia’s progress agenda.

“This year, the ministry has been allocated RM4.355 billion, representing a four per cent increase compared to the previous year,” she said.

She added that the National Women’s Policy and Women’s Development Action Plan 2025 to 2030 would continue to support women’s participation and leadership across sectors.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the Women’s Leadership Apprenticeship Programme, which connects emerging women leaders with experienced mentors, and PRISMAnita, which provides early intervention, advice, referrals and coordinated support for women in need, including survivors of domestic violence.

Tanjong Batu State House of Representatives (ADUN) member Johnny Pang Leong Ming said Muay Thai not only helps improve physical fitness, but also educates athletes, especially young people, to be disciplined and use skills productively.

"Muay Thai is a good form of physical training for everyone, especially athletes. Most importantly, the sport educates them to be disciplined", he said.

He said this when he was contacted by the media after witnessing the 10th Sarawak Muay Thai Premier Cup at Paragon Naim Street Mall, here, last night.

Meanwhile, the President of Muaythai Association of Sarawak State (PMNS), Jumaat Ibrahim said that the participation of athletes from six countries in the tournament opened up an opportunity to introduce Bintulu to the international community, thus promoting the city's attraction to foreign visitors.

He said that the presence of international participants allowed them to get acquainted with Bintulu's facilities and uniqueness, including ports, industrial zones, hotels as well as local food options.

"When they return to their home countries, they will share their experiences and tell about Bintulu to the communities in their country", he said.

Sarawak Government Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said the new campus provides integrated facilities to support implementation of training and professional development programs among public service members.

According to him, the pre-launching ceremony of the campus was held in order to give department heads an opportunity to see for themselves what facilities are available before being utilized for civil servant training.

"The launch was held briefly to give the department heads an opportunity to see for themselves the facilities provided at the institute, which will be utilised for training and human resource development purposes among civil servants", he said at the LISCS New Campus Pre-Launch Council here today.

The campus is equipped with various facilities including dormitories, lecture rooms and auditoriums to provide a conducive environment for training and professional development.

The existence of LISCS is expected to enable multiple competency development programmes to be implemented in an integrated manner under one institution, thus helping civil servants improve their knowledge and skills in the performance of tasks.

His speech on the occasion of the National Sports Day 2026 Celebration of Sibu Division Rankings at Azman Hashim Community Sports Complex, Sibu Jaya, was read by Sarawak Premier's Political Secretary Joshua Ting Fu Ying.

King Sing said the celebration should be a platform to encourage communities to adopt healthy lifestyles through physical activity according to their ability.

"When it comes to sports, we have to prioritize health and safety aspects including taking into account self-efficacy, weather conditions and air quality, especially when there is fog", he said.

Touching on the achievements of Sarawak's athletes in national and international sporting competitions, he said, these achievements demonstrate Sarawak's potential to produce high-performance athletes.

"The Sarawak School Sports Council (MSS) sports contingent won eight gold, seven silver and 12 bronze medals at the 66th MSSM Games in Pahang and placed fourth overall, up from sixth place in the 2025 edition", he said.

He also praised the achievements of Sarawak Paralympic athletes who contributed 13 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals to Malaysia at the 13th Asean Games in Korat, Thailand earlier this year.

"Great to the children of Sarawak the name of Earth Kenyalang on the stage. Let's take the spirit of National Sports Day 2026 to continue to lead healthy lifestyles", he said. - TVS

KUCHING, 17 Oct: Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) provides industrial training opportunities and innovation programs to university students as well as new graduates to develop artificial intelligence (AI) skills and gain experience solving real world problems.

SAIC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Dr Patrick Then said that the initiative aims to generate local talent capable of developing practical AI applications and leveraging the relevant technology infrastructure in Sarawak.

He said SAIC is working closely with the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) in developing AI ecosystems, especially through human capital development as an important component of the industry.

"As much technology and data as we have, we still need local talent capable of developing useful AI applications and ensuring that the AI infrastructure is exploitable", he said during a media briefing at the NVIDIA RTX AI PC Workshop hosted by PC Image at Swinburne Sarawak University of Technology, here today.

According to him, SAIC also plays a role as co-coordinator and advisor with MEITD as well as higher education institutions, including Swinburne Sarawak University of Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Kolej Universiti i-CATS, Universitas Curtin and Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS).

The partnership includes sharing information on the latest technology and developments in the AI industry to help educational institutions adapt curricula so that students are exposed to current technologies and policies of the industry.

Meanwhile, Algoin Tech Game Director Ayden Lim Phong Hian said that local AI technology allows students and creative activists to create digital content without relying entirely on online AI platforms requiring token purchase or subscription.

He said NVIDIA GeForce RTX technology enables users to leverage the capabilities of graphics processing units (GPUs) to locally generate AI content, including for game development, animation and creative content production.

According to him, the use of platforms such as ComfyUI enables students to generate reference images, character design, game environments and cinematic scenes to support the creative work production process.

Ayden also shared his experience using AI in Tajang game development, as well as producing launch videos for several government events including Sarawak Day, Malaysia Day and Air Borneo launch.

"Don't be afraid that AI will replace us because AI is actually a tool to help speed things up. In the creative industry, we can use AI to generate reference images before finishing up with our own skills and creativity", he said.

KUCHING, Oct 17: The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies demands that leaders prioritize integrity, accountability and trust in decision-making, said Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

He said the technological changes that enable AI systems to perform tasks is increasingly complex making aspects of responsibility, human supervision and transparency increasingly important in ensuring that technological advances are used ethically.

He also used the art of weaving Pua Kumbu as an effective representation of leadership, explaining that each thread has its own role, but the overall strength of the weaving depends on the harmony of its spacing.

"Each thread has its own function and purpose, but the beauty of the structure as well as the strength of the whole weave depends on how the threads are woven harmoniously.

"Similarly, progress can be sustained when innovation is combined with integrity, resilience and respect for humanity", he said while addressing the EmpowerUS 2026 Seminar on 'Empowering Leaders: Sustainable, Resilient and Ethical Leadership' here today.

Nancy said that values of ethical leadership are not only important among top leaders, but should be practiced in universities, business sectors, public institutions and community organizations.

Meanwhile, Nancy said that the strength of a nation should not be measured solely by economic progress, but also by taking into account opportunities for women, family resilience and the dignity of each member of society.

She said the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development received RM4.355 billion allocation through Budget 2027, up four per cent from the previous year, to strengthen social protection and community development.

"Among the efforts to empower women is the Women's Leadership Accountability Program which provides guidance and mentoring networks for future female leaders, in addition to PRISMAnita which offers early intervention, advisory services, referrals and integrated support to women in need of assistance, including victims of domestic violence", she said.

KUCHING, Oct. 17: Children's daycare entrepreneurs (TASKA) are advised to stop all outdoor activities during the rainy season in order to reduce health risks for children.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that TASKA entrepreneurs still operating should take precautionary measures to ensure children are not exposed to polluted air.

"Our advice is not to take them outside and no outdoor activities until the dust settles. If any children are sick, please take them to the doctor", he said.

He said this in a press conference following the inauguration of EmpowerUS 2026 Seminar here today.

Nancy said the decision to close schools is subject to the determination of the respective state authorities, while TASKA's operations must take into account current circumstances as well as considerations by employers and parents.

He said that his side understood the needs of working parents and relied on childcare services, so safety and health of children should continue to be a priority throughout the rainy season.

Separately, Nancy said, more than 5,000 cases of domestic violence were reported in the first eight months of this year.

She said women should be supported to understand the rights and legal protections available, as well as strengthen economic and financial freedom to help them cope with difficult situations.

CROATIA: Two students from Sarawak have secured second place in the RoboMission Junior category at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2026 Open Championship Europe in Zagreb, Croatia, bringing international recognition to the state’s young robotics talents.

Matthew Cheong and Timothy Cheong, both students of Borneo International School, represented Malaysia as Team Malaysia Boleh at the championship held from Oct 13 to 16.

They finished as runners-up in a competition that brought together more than 220 teams from 45 countries, showcasing their skills in robotics, programming, engineering, creativity and problem-solving.

Their achievement also highlighted efforts to develop young talent in Sarawak through collaboration between educational institutions, specialised training centres and government agencies.

The duo received intensive training from TESSLAB, a robotics training centre based in Miri, covering robot design, programming and competition strategies in preparation for the international challenge.

Their participation was sponsored by the Sarawak Government through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

The support reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to provide young people with opportunities to develop their potential, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In an interview after the competition, Matthew and Timothy expressed their appreciation to the Sarawak Government for supporting their participation and helping them realise their ambition of competing on the world stage.

Their achievement is a source of pride for their families and school, while demonstrating the potential of Sarawak students to compete internationally when given access to appropriate training, guidance and resources.

The result is also expected to encourage more students in Sarawak to explore robotics, programming and digital technology, fields that are increasingly important to future economic development.

It further supports Sarawak’s ambition to nurture a highly skilled, innovative and competitive generation as the state advances its technology- and innovation-driven economy.
