BINTULU, Oct 17: Road safety education must be implemented from an early age to form a disciplined and responsible generation of road users.
Tanjong Batu State House of Representatives (ADUN) member, Johnny Pang Leong Ming said early exposure is important to ensure children understand road safety rules and practice them in everyday life.
He said that children are also exposed to road hazards when they are pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists or vehicle passengers.
"Road safety needs to be nurtured from an early age so that it becomes a lifelong practice", he said.
He said this while addressing the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) Ranking Bintulu Section 2026 program at Bintulu Traffic Park, today.
He said the programme gives students an opportunity to learn practical road safety, including identifying signs, traffic lights and pedestrian tracks.
He said participants were also encouraged to share knowledge gained with family and peers to raise awareness of the importance of road safety.
He also stressed the importance of adults setting a good example by obeying road rules as their behaviour is also an example to children.
Meanwhile, he said, the development of Bintulu as an important industrial and economic hub is increasing the need for education and road safety awareness.
In this regard, he recorded the award to the Government of Sarawak through the Ministry of Transport of Sarawak for approval of RM350,000 allocation for upgrading Bintulu Traffic Park.
He hoped that the facility would be used continuously for learning activities and road safety awareness programmes with schools, not just during competitions.
