MIRI, 17 Oct: Miri was properly developed as Sarawak Martial Arts Hub following encouraging reception to the development of the sport, thereby opening up opportunities for expanding tournament sponsorship and athletic development in the city.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the proposal to build a dedicated Martial Arts Stadium in Miri could be considered to support the development of various sports disciplines.

According to him, the facility could provide a more organized training and competition space for karate, taekwondo, fencing, wushu and other martial disciplines.

"This facility will not only provide a more organized training and competitive space, but also potentially attract the participation of athletes from across Sarawak as well as organising tournaments at national and international levels", he said while addressing Miri Interschool Karate Championship 2026, here today.

He also touched on the proposal to include karate in the calendar of the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM), following discussions with Deputy Prime Minister at the end of June 2026.

He said that the effort required careful planning and cooperation between schools, education departments, sports associations, coaches, parents and relevant government agencies.

"I feel that this proposal deserves attention as it has the potential to open up more opportunities for students to develop talent and build a clearer sports path", he said.

He also encouraged continued support from the private sector and sponsors to help provide equipment, training facilities as well as logistical assistance for the development of the school sports. - TVS
