KUCHING Oct 19: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has lauded the Sarawak government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and resolving traffic issues for the public with the RM88.98 million Stutong Link Road and the Roundabout upgrade project.

Speaking to reporters after the handover ceremony for the project from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to the contractor, Ibraco Construction Sdn Bhd, near SMK Tabuan Jaya here today, he said the project will provide significant long-term benefits for commuters and area residents despite the 24-month construction timeline.

He also explained that the council initiated the project over two years ago to address traffic congestion affecting residents and schools in the area after the Kuching-Kota Samarahan Expressway was completed.

“MBKS brought these issues to the State government’s attention to improve local access and traffic flow. After feasibility studies, the project is now a reality,” he said.

The project, spanning 3.3km and adhering to the JKR U5 road standard, also involves upgrading the existing single carriageway to a dual carriageway and converting the Stutong Roundabout into a signalised junction—along with road pavement improvements, new road furniture, and the construction of a 90-meter reinforced concrete bridge over Sungai Stutong—which will ease traffic congestion in this part of Kuching and significantly improve accessibility.

Upgrading work is expected to start tomorrow (Oct 20), and the project is expected to be completed by Oct 2028. — DayakDaily
