MUKAH, 15 Oct: A 61-year-old local man lost RM1,300 after being believed to be the victim of an online contest scam offering a Honda HR-V car and RM100,000 in cash.

Mukah Regional Police Chief, DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the victim who worked as a security guard at a construction company in the district was attracted to a contest ad on Facebook last October 9, around 6pm.

According to him, the victim then clicked on the link in the ad and followed instructions given before being notified via WhatsApp app that he won a Honda HR-V car.

"The victim was also asked to provide a picture of his identity card and photo of his alleged home for the delivery of the gift, before being ordered to pay RM1,300 for the cost of delivery.

"The victim made three transactions, namely RM300 on October 10, RM500 on October 12 and RM500 on October 13", he said in a statement today.

However, he said, the victim was once again asked to pay RM1,500 due to rising oil costs for gift shipments.

"Recognizing the suspicion, the victim appeared to make a police report yesterday.

"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code", he said.
