KUCHING, Oct. 17: Building heritage conservation in Kuching is the focus of ICOMOS-CIF Masterclass program to strengthen professional expertise in protecting buildings and historic areas.

The Training the Trainers programme is themed Conserving Old Kuching: Preserving Culture, Conserving Heritage & Encouraging Arts and runs for two days from today to 18 October at SMA Creative Heritage Innovation Centre (CHIC).

According to ICOMOS-CIF media statement, the program brings together heritage conservation experts from various international institutions, architectural professionals as well as officials of local authorities and state and Federal government agencies.

"Through lecture sessions, fieldwork, analysis and presentations, participants will explore strategies to integrate national legislation with international best practice guidelines, leverage local knowledge systems as well as understand tangible and intangible aspects of building heritage", according to the statement.

Old Kuching has a cultural and architectural diversity that makes it one of the important areas in heritage conservation efforts.

Throughout the program, participants also explored the principles and best practices of heritage conservation at local, national and international levels, including aspects of intangible heritage that shape Kuching's cultural identity as well as history.

The discussions also included strategies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and natural disasters, as well as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies in heritage conservation.

Among the experts involved was ICOMOS-CIF President, Dr Cristina Gonzalez-Longo, along with academics and conservation professionals from Europe, Asia and Malaysia.

The initiative is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve the building heritage in Kuching more systematically by taking into account the importance of local history, culture and knowledge. - TVS
