KUCHING, Oct 15: A total of 557 solar LED light units identified to be installed along the route from the junction of Pan Borneo Highway to Pekan Kabong involves a distance of about 37.7 kilometers at an estimated cost of RM3.62 million.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the installation of additional street lights was aimed at improving road safety especially during night.
"For the information of Honourable Member for Kabong, my ministry has taken note of issues related to lack of lighting in sharp slopes, crossings, bridges and villages.
"The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has identified areas that require the installation of solar LED lights", he said.
He said this in response to a question from Member of the National Assembly (DUN) Kabong, Dato Mohamad Chee Kadir at the 19th Sarawak State Assembly (DUN) Conference today.
According to Aidel, the installation of solar LED lights on the route is part of an effort to improve lighting levels, reduce accident risk and provide comfort for road users as well as locals.
He said earlier 700 units of solar LED lights were installed by Saratok District Council through the allocation of BDDA in last year from Roban junction to Kabong Market.
"Lights are installed at a distance of 30 meters in slopes and 60 meters on straight roads to improve road safety", he said.
Meanwhile, it is clear that the installation of 557 additional solar LED light units at Pan Borneo to Pekan Kabong junction route is expected to increase the level of illumination along the route.
"In addition to the installation of solar LED lights, JKR Sarawak has taken strategic measures such as installing blinkers, roadstuds, signs and roadlines along the route to ensure the comfort and safety of road users", he explained.
The effort is expected to help road users through risky areas more safely, as well as reduce the likelihood of accidents due to lack of lighting, especially at night.
