GEDONG, Oct 18: Late-stage detection of diabetes or diabetes becomes a concern as many individuals only learn they have the disease after their health conditions become more serious, in addition to the growing need for dialysis treatment.

Sarawak Prime Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the situation demonstrates the importance of early detection of disease to avoid health complications that could affect everyday life of the community.

"Diabetes can be dangerous if detected late. Currently, many people only know they have the disease when they are already in advanced stages", he said at a press conference on Sarawak Disease Control Program (DSP) 2026 at Buntin Lubok Community Hall here today.

According to Abang Johari, the trend of increasing diabetes is also being identified in Sibu, while the growing need for dialysis treatment shows the importance of prevention and early detection measures.

"Our health base must be based on the conditions that are occurring in their respective areas", he said, stressing the need for research to obtain accurate health data.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the rise in non-communicable diseases also requires serious attention, especially from the early detection aspect to reduce risk of health complications.

"Noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are on the rise. Cancer cases are also on the rise, while late detection is one of the things to look out for", he said. - TVS
